Finding Atahualpa’s Treasure
Steve opened his eyes, stretched, and yawned to stop his head splitting. Where am I? he wondered as he turned over in a seemingly rickety bed to confront a girl sleeping on the other pillow. And who is she? His brain tried to reach back, his heart pumping loudly in his ears. Then his mind suddenly woke up to where he was: in a scruffy hotel in Baños, Ecuador; and who she was: the girl from the hotel; and why on Earth was he here: this is the day I am to set off to find Atahualpa’s Treasure. Steve groaned, his mind clearing a little more: I had planned it all so well and now what a bloody mess I’m in.
He staggered out of bed to the toilet and then flopped back in again, trying to remember how it had all started: it was after his divorce when he had decided to get a new life: new friends and interests: he had gone to an Adult Education session in Loughborough where the speaker, a Dr Kelvin James, had talked on the geology and history of the Llanganates mountains of Ecuador and the possibility of finding King Atahualpa’s treasure in a cave in the limestone mountains. After the session, Dr James had explained to him that many people had tried
