A perilous crossing

On the morning of February 28, within 24 hours of leaving port, my fellow shipmate Athena woke me at 0700 in the morning. Breakfast would be ready by 0730 and at 0800 our watch would relieve hers. An early wake-up call is essential to help the next watch prepare, but also allows time for that welcome coffee.

As I emerged from the steep companionway steps at 0740, with six cartons of Frische Bio Alpenmilch – fresh organic alpine milk, bo’sun tells me to drop everything and help take down all sails.
