Linda trudged away from the gym, her heavy pack slung over her shoulders. She had spent the summer telling herself that her freshman year at college would be different. She had moved into a dorm and was going to be independent and have all of those wonderful experiences that she’d read about. She had even worked up the courage to try out for the cheer squad.

But the caption of the squad had been snide when she started and by the time she finished Linda was all but laughed out of the gym. Worse was that several members of football team had turned up to watch the practice, including her long time crush Thomas.

She had barely held back the tears until she was in the woods behind the campus. It wasn’t fair; she had done the routine fine. But they didn’t like the way she looked. They were models and she was just average. But she didn’t want to spend three hours a morning on her hair and makeup just to look like them.

And that made her wrong to them. She read the wrong books, listened to the wrong music, watched the wrong movies, and knew the wrong people. Everything about her was wrong and they made sure that she and everyone else at the practice knew it.

So she had left as quickly as she could, taking the well-used tracks behind the school, then the seldom walked trails deeper in the forest.
