    CHAPTER ONE

Dr. Cleopatra Williams, PhD Temple University Magna Cum Laude, smacked the fire demon upside the head with a rolled up magazine that she kept handy for such occasions. Her mother had used it repeatedly on the ingrates who wouldn’t stay off the front step of their West Philadelphia row house, although Momma Williams now secured hers with a strand of strapping tape. It held out longer than the magazine itself and she didn’t have to buy a new copy of Vanity Fair every time she needed to make a point.

The fire demon went down hard and slammed into the wall behind her as it screamed out curses not heard since the final season of Good Times. It stood up and Doc Cleo hit it again. This time the fire demon went down hard, as the impact of the magazine had broken his jawbone. He screamed at the top of his lungs while holding his face and looked up. Over him stood one pissed-off psychic investigator. If the Wrath Of God could ever achieve human form it might resemble a tall Philly woman of color who was wearing leather boots, a business suit, and was holding onto a rolled-up copy of a magazine that was left over from last Christmas. She had pulled it out of her bag just prior to walking back into the house. It came in handy.

Jesus Christ, lady! the demon howled on the floor, What the fuck did I ever do to you?

Doc Cleo hauled off and hit the fire demon with the edge of her shoe. This time the dime store mask flew off of its face and smashed into the wall. The fire demon looked up at her and knew the fun was now over. He’d been paid good money to scare the family out of the house, but no amount of money was worth this. If his friends ever found out what happened, there would be no end to the humiliation. He got up, holding onto his jaw and still wobbling. How did she know about the passage between the walls?

She reached over and grabbed the fire demon by the collar and pulled him out of the passageway he didn’t think anyone knew about. But Cleo had come of age in one of these old row houses and knew all about the construction of them. It was nothing for her to figure out where the source of the sounds was coming from when the family’s friend called her the other night. One glance online told her all she needed to know; the area was in the sites of a developer and too many of the older families were holding out for more money.

While he began to cry, Doc Cleo grabbed the lighter fluid he’d concealed behind the wall. The mask was a good trick, but not good enough. Ant took the phone call for her and he wrote down the description. She knew what to look for when Cleo pulled out her old Trappe Costume Company catalogue. There it was. The Bloody Face of Evil, available in red, orange, or luminescent green. Home-boy had bought the one in red because that was what fire demons were supposed to resemble.

Here’s your fire demon! she told the family who were huddled on the sidewalk. Ramona was translating to them in Spanish. They were from Chile and her Columbian dialect was a little off, but she could make herself understood. Doc Cleo sent the miscreant to the curb with one push as he continued to cry.

She turned to Razdan. Call the police and have this fool locked up, she ordered. If the family won’t press charges, I will. Call Lou the lawyer and tell him that we have need of his ambulance-chasing services again.

Razdan grimaced and pulled out his cell phone, dialing a number. Some of the local residents were already out trying to figure out what was happening in the house. The place was the scene of nightly disturbances and the porch was filled with prayer candles and charms, none of which had done the least bit of good. The family was constantly terrified of fires breaking out and mysterious sounds in the night. Finally, someone had seen Dr. Williams on TV being interviewed about her work
