    CHAPTER 1

She sucks, Simon exclaimed, pulling off his earphones and sitting back in his chair with a sigh.

Alex Gety believed him. They had been sitting in the small studio for almost six hours, trying their best to record back-up vocals to their newest song, but the girl in the booth was a disaster. Alex tried to ignore the fact that her shorts showed off an incredible pair of legs and that the blouse above it was more than enough to give him a pretty good idea what was underneath. The reality of the situation was he would have to tell the striking brunette that they wouldn’t be using her voice on the track.

    Can’t we use anything?

Simon looked at him with scrutiny, his frown enough to answer the question. Next time you meet a hot chick at a club who tells you she can sing, make sure she can before you waste my time.

Gety smiled, slapping Simon on his back as he walked into the recording room. He loved the man, a younger version of himself without the singing talent. But, boy did he have an ear. The blonde producer had been working with Alex for almost seven years now, and despite his prices and the band manager’s objections, Alex would have it no other way. After a five year hiatus, it was Simon’s work that had out them back on the charts. Along with spectacular music, of course.

Alex signaled the brunette out of the booth, her smile breaking his heart.

How was I? she asked excitedly.

    Listen, Susan, Alex began.

    Karen.

Karen, sorry. Listen, we’re going to have to take another direction here. We’ve been running the track, and a female vocalist just isn’t the right fit for this one.

The brunette didn’t seem to be bothered by the news, simply shrugging her shoulders and saying, Oh well, at least we tried, right?

That you did, yes, Alex said with a smile.

    But was it good?

Alex grabbed her by the waist and pulled her closer. Sweetheart, you sounded like an angel.

Caroline Frey was half undressed before opening the door to her apartment and straggling in. It had been a long day, and the heat was not helping. Unsnapping her bra and letting the girls loose, she made her way into the kitchen while kicking off her heels and grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge. She took a long drink, spilling water as the cold liquid raced down her throat.

Her cellphone began to ring just as she rolled down her pants and stepped out of them, one hand grabbing for it while the other frisked her pants pockets for her cigarettes.

Caroline, honey, do I have some good news for you!

Caroline lit her cigarette, waiting, knowing that Jeremy never called with good news unless it was a job he was getting a good cut from. Her last three shoots with him had been a complete disaster, and she was half thinking of just hanging up.

What do you want Jeremy? she asked, slumping down on her couch and stretching her legs out in front of her.

    Frozen Horizons, Jeremy said excitedly.

    The band?

The band? No, the football team from Arkansas, Jeremy mocked. Of course the band.

Caroline took a long drag from her cigarette. What about them?

Just got a call from their manager. They want to hire a crew to film a documentary about them on the road. Two months of stable work, and the pay is incredible.

Caroline sat up straight. Despite her problems with anything Jeremy had to offer in terms of stable, she had to admit that the prospect was promising. Running the figures through her head, her eyes widened with the final number she’d be putting in her pocket.

When do we meet them? she asked hurriedly.

Jeremy laughed on the other end. Honey, I knew you were going to say that.

Alex walked into Max’s Lounge with a smile on his face, the loud music and smoky atmosphere an instant rush. He made his through the crowd, slapping backs, kissing cheeks and shaking hands with several of the guests. He waved at the bartender, a gesture that was enough to make sure his rounds kept coming for the rest of the night.

He found the rest of his band members in the back lounge, a VIP area that was usually closed off for them, no matter who came waltzing through the front doors. Alex slumped down on one of the several couches and threw his legs up on the table in front of him.

    How was she?

Steven was sitting on the opposite couch, arms around two beautiful women who couldn’t seem to keep their hands off him. Alex watched as one of them slipped her hand into his pants and whispered something into the drummer’s ear.

Terrible, Alex replied, thanking the waiter that brought him his drink. Couldn’t sing to save her life.

Alex scanned the faces of his band members, Steven only half listening to him and concentrating more on the hand around his cock, Alan half asleep and Lucas twirling his drumsticks around like he had nothing better to do. Not one of them seemed to care if the record ever finished, and Alex knew it was only a matter of time before they’d all be going their separate ways.

Clive called, Alan said out of the blue, his head sagging from side to side. Said that he found some crew to film our documentary.

What documentary? Alex asked, frowning as he sat up straight. He didn’t remember Clive mentioning anything about a documentary.

Clive thought it was a good idea to have our tour filmed into a documentary, you know, for like a DVD or something, Alan explained, waving his hands around in slow circles.

Alex looked to the others, eyes jumping from Steven to Lucas and back again. Did you all know about this?

Alex, you knew about this, Lucas said, air drumming.

    When did this come up?

When you had your tongue down that brunette’s throat, Lucas winked. What’s the big deal? So we have a few idiots following us around with cameras and shit. Who cares?

Alex sat back and sighed, wondering just how much trouble this crew would be. Two months on the road was bad enough, everyone constantly in each other’s face, the endless rehearsals. Their last tour had ended in a disaster, big enough to get them nation-wide coverage. Who knew what the extra stress of cameras would do.

Relax, man, Steven sighed, the other girl’s hand now in his pants as well. We’re going to get real money from this documentary.

We already get real money, Alex said. Just try to make it to the studio tomorrow and get those bass lines down.

Steven shot him a smile, then threw his head back as the girls pleasured him.

Simon Hew shut down his computer in frustration.

He had been working on the new set of tracks for the album for almost four hours, and had gotten no closer to any of the older songs. He had poured his heart and soul into Frozen Horizons, blowing off a lot of work to concentrate on what he believed was the greatest rock band of the decade. He had gone wild with the last three albums, his hard work a testimony to the world, or at least to those who cared to know who the producer was.

Now his creative juices were running low, and he was starting to panic.

Simon stood up from the console and stretched, listening to bones crack as he stomped his feet to get the blood flowing again. He had to get some rest. He knew the band would be on the road in a few weeks, and his mind raced with how much recording needed to be done before they left.

He walked out of the control room and stopped, surprised to see Karen sitting on one of the couches with her cellphone in her hand. She looked up at him and smiled, her legs uncrossing as she stood up.

Karen, Simon said, his eyes taking in the curves of her legs and moving their way up. I thought you were gone.

I did leave, Karen said, but I remembered something. When I told my friends I was going into the studio to do vocals for a Frozen Horizons track, they freaked out.

Simon nodded. That usually is the reaction.

They told me that it was the best thing to ever happen to a girl who wanted to break into the business. Karen walked up to Simon, slowly, putting a hand on his chest as she looked him in the eye. They also told me that the producer makes or breaks the tracks that get recorded.

Simon gulped, quickly glancing at the bare mounds of her breasts that were peeking up at him from her undone blouse button. We have a lot of say in the matter, but not that much.

Karen pushed herself against him, her firmness exciting a reaction between his legs. You still need a female singer for that track, don’t you?

Simon found it a little hard to lie, her closeness wiping his mind blank of any excuse Alex had given him to use. "I don’t
