La foresta primordiale si estendeva da ogni parte, luogo di commedie rumorose e silenziose tragedie. Qui la lotta per la sopravvivenza continuava in tutta la sua antica brutalità. Inglesi e Russi dovevano ancora iniziare ad avvicendarsi e scontrarsi nella Terra della Fine dell’Arcobaleno e, questo è il cuore della faccenda, l’oro degli Yankee non aveva ancora comprato i suoi vasti domini. Branchi di lupi stavano ancora addosso ai fianchi delle mandrie di caribù, separando l’esemplare debole da quello forte, per poi abbatterlo al suolo spietatamente, così come avevano sempre fatto da migliaia e migliaia di generazioni. Sparuti gruppi di indigeni riconoscevano ancora la legge dei loro capi e gli uomini-medicina cacciavano gli spiriti maligni, bruciavano le loro streghe, combattevano i loro vicini e mangiavano le carni dei loro nemici, con un gusto che parlava per i loro ventri. Ma venne il tempo in cui l’età della pietra volse al termine. Già adesso, attraverso piste sconosciute e aree selvagge di cui non vi è traccia sulle mappe, i portatori dell’acciaio stavano arrivando, facce pulite, occhi blu, uomini indomiti, incarnazioni dell’irrequietezza della loro razza. Da soli, in gruppi di due o tre, venivano da chissà dove, combattevano, morivano e passavano, nessuno sapeva diretti verso dove. I sacerdoti si infuriavano contro di loro, i capi chiamavano a raccolta i loro guerrieri e la pietra si scontrava contro l’acciaio; con scarsi risultati. Come acqua che filtra da un enorme serbatoio scorrevano attraverso le oscure foreste e i passi montani, attraversando le alte vie con canoe fatte di corteccia, o con piedi rivestiti di mocassini, aprendo piste per i cani lupo. Discendevano da una grande razza, e molte erano le loro madri; ma gli abitanti vestiti di pelliccia delle Terre del Nord questo dovevano ancora impararlo. Così, molti di questi sconosciuti erranti vennero qui a combattere per l’ultima volta e a morire sotto il gelido fuoco dell’aurora, proprio come altri loro fratelli facevano in spiagge infuocate o in giungle maleodoranti; così continueranno a vagabondare finché tempo non giungerà che il destino della loro razza sarà compiuto.
Era quasi la mezza. Lungo l’orizzonte settentrionale un bagliore rosato, dissolvendosi ad ovest per inabissarsi ad est, segnava l’invisibile discesa del sole di mezzanotte. Crepuscolo e aurora erano così mescolati che non vi era notte, solo le nozze del giorno con il giorno dopo, una fusione appena percettibile dei due cerchi del sole. Un passerotto cinguettava timidamente la buonanotte; l’ugola piena e brillante di un pettirosso salutava il buongiorno. Da un’isola nel seno dello Yukon una colonia di uccelli selvatici strideva con interminabili versi, mentre una strolaga rideva beffardamente attraverso la distesa del fiume.
