    A lot of good it does you, followin’ your heart, he said.

    Campanelle spit a mouthful of blood somewhere out into the dark. He had no idea where he was and even less of an idea as to how he came to be here.

    It was an old park, consisting of a playground and a softball field, all grown over or at least grown quiet with so much disuse. The air was heavy with what was, unmistakably, secrets. If you have ever noticed how burdensome the atmosphere can be when someone leans in to whisper a secret to you, how colossal their breaths in spite of all efforts, you can almost, and only almost, begin to imagine a place in which every breath you try to take is one already spent by someone else’s ghost.

    The park gave an impression of being forgotten on purpose, as if the town, needing a closet to keep all of its skeletons, had quietly steered away anyone who didn’t belong. And here Campanelle was, having penetrated this deep space quite by accident. He made an effort at wiping the blood off of his mouth with the back of his hand.

    The park seemed to be illuminated by the plentiful snow, though spring had arrived everywhere else in town. No other light touched down on the ground, and a darkness clung so tightly to everything that the place must have only just barely existed. The merry-go-round turned slowly on its own, but it made no noise, while the swings were creaking even as they remained still. The pattering of feet could be heard on the wind, perhaps the sound of children playing tag . . . or was it hide-and-seek? Campanelle certainly did not see anyone.

    He imagined this place was quite upset it had let its guard down, so he gathered up all of the courage he had before he chanced shouting into the dark.
