The Decision

Second semester second year was passing all too fast.

Melianna had enjoyed her two years at the junior college, but now it was time for a decision.

Most of her friends were going onto the state college; Becca was getting married and Brianna had been offered a fabulous job at Geek Computers.

Melianna thought -- I’m fair in science, and better than okay in English, but I’m tired of studying. I like people more than books.

Mmmm, maybe teaching. But that would mean more studying. Besides, I want to meet people but I don’t want to babysit. I wonder what kind of jobs I could do?

She was about to go to the counseling center to see if they could give her some tests that would show her what she would be good at.

Kersham! In came Jodie her suitemate. Jodie was always a barrel of fun. An art major -- Jodie hadn’t decided what to do yet either. Her dream would be to go straight to the left bank of Paris and set up an easel.

Manana! Jodie had her own pet name for Melianna. She liked to call her ‘Manana’ because it rhymed with ‘Banana.’

Manana! You wouldn’t believe what’s happening on campus!

Chapter 2

Being Chosen

Cecil Airlines is interviewing in the Union. If we hurry, we can get there before they leave.

Without thinking, Melianna grabbed her backpack and hurried out the door with Jodie.

There were eight girls ahead of them and one guy. There was April - tall and blonde - like a model. She would surely be chosen. Angelique - a French speaking light-skinned black girl from the islands - would be a shoo in. The others were pretty ordinary-looking. Maybe we have a chance thought Melianna.

But wait, what am I doing here? I never thought about being an airline stewardess. Well, I did say I liked working with people. I probably won’t get it anyway. I wonder what it is they look for. I hope not top grades. Mine are pretty average.

Well, I guess it won’t hurt to go through the process. It might be good practice. I’ll stay in line for Jodie’s sake.
