    The Ogre's Mistress

    ––––––––

Samantha gripped the edge of the rocks as she pulled herself up onto the ledge. Her red hair billowed in the wind as she gasped for air, detaching her harness and sighing in relief. After climbing for over six hours, reaching her goal had felt much more incredible than she could have possibly imagined. The view from the summit was unlike anything that she had ever seen before, and she realized that all of the struggle she had went through had been entirely worth it to see the landscape before her.

A bird circled overhead as Samantha reached into her knapsack to retrieve her camera. It cawed as it circumnavigated the mountainside and she felt a shiver run down her spine. The bird's call sounded ominous, but she did not ponder the thought for long, for she realized that she was probably being paranoid due to her low blood sugar. The climb had exhausted her and she looked forward to eating the protein bar in her knapsack. She photographed the sun setting upon the mountainous horizon and sat down on a boulder before she began fishing through her belongings in search of the protein bar.

Where in the bloody hell— she muttered under her breath, rummaging through the few necessary belongings that she had brought along with her on her hike. The protein bar was nowhere to be found amongst her out-of-service cellular phone, a canteen, a pile of hand warmers, and emergency flares. She strapped the canteen across her back and kept searching as her stomach rumbled due to her hunger.

Her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of a loud grunt in the distance. Startled, she jumped and her things fell in disarray upon the blanket of snow. She furrowed her brow and peered in the direction from which the noise came, unsure what kind of an animal could make such a sound.

The mysterious creature grunted once more and, alarmed, Samantha began backing up, her eyes frantically searching for whatever the grunt belonged to. She did not know of any wildlife that lived at such high altitudes that would be capable of such a guttural noise. She had heard tales of yetis, but no such creature actually existed, to her knowledge.

The third grunt sounded much closer, and fear overcame her. She dropped her things and began backing up, only to trip over a small rock and fall backwards. Her heart pounded in her chest as she slid, her hands clawing for a rock to grab onto in an attempt to stabilize herself. Nothing could stop her momentum and she felt herself beginning to slide away from the summit. The next ledge was over a three-hundred foot drop away. She tried to sink her fingers and boots into the edge of the rock formations, but the icy surface compromised her grip. The edge was near and she could feel the surface disappearing from beneath her as she slid further backwards. Then, gravity took hold. The fall was imminent.

By the hour that Samantha awoke, she was not even capable of opening her eyes. Agony had seemingly paralyzed her, and her broken legs had proven useless. She was unsure if her hands were numb from the blizzard that had begun while she was unconscious or if they were as broken as her legs. Her throat was parched, but she knew that she would die from hypothermia before she died of dehydration. Both concepts terrified her. Despite all of her experience mountain climbing, she had never considered that she could fall. What scared her the most was the thought of the creature that was responsible for startling her. If it lived near the summit, it surely would have no difficulty finding her and making her into its next meal.

She slowly found enough energy to move her frostbitten hands and lethargically reached for her canteen. She squeezed a few drops into her mouth and cleared her throat. She was afraid to scream in case she attracted the creature, but she knew she would die if she found nobody to help her. She could not move her head, but she was able to open her eyes enough to scan everything around her within eyeshot. She looked above her at the summit from which she fell and quickly realized that her cellular phone was with the rest of her things on the upper ledge. Her hope began to dwindle. She knew that nobody would hear her if she cried for help.

After trying to crawl, she knew that there was no chance that she would be able to get down from the spot where she lay. She could not even move more than a few feet without running out of energy. Her pain exhausted her rapidly, and she was desperate to give herself one last attempt at saving her own life.

Help! she managed to yell. It echoed throughout the mountainous terrain, but not a sound was returned to her other than her own and a gust of harsh, icy wind. Please, help me!

Then, her worst nightmare became a reality. Her cries for help had been heard by the creature with which she had previously had an auditory encounter. It grunted the loudest, most guttural grunt that she had heard yet. Tears fell down her cheeks as she came to the realization that her only chance at survival was ruined with another threat to her life.

Another grunt echoed, and it was significantly closer. Samantha did not know how much time had passed, but she closed her eyes and awaited her death. She heard the sound of rocks falling to a ledge several hundred feet below and it was evident that the creature was quickly approaching her. She could hear the sound of her heartbeat resonating in her eardrums.

This might be the last time I ever hear it at all, she thought to herself. She looked to the sky and said a silent prayer, desperate for some miracle to grant her the opportunity to live. The footsteps of the creature grew nearer and tears poured down her face. Her breathing hitched and all she could do was wait for the end.

Suddenly, she felt a pair of incredibly strong arms scoop her up as she shook in fear. The creature's stench was overpowering, and she knew that whatever it was that had taken hold of her was not human, but it was somehow bipedal. Her eyes slowly opened and through her blurred vision she could only make out a wide nose, thick, scaly skin, and large, protruding teeth.

I-is th-this thing a-a y-y-yeti? she managed, quietly, frightened for her life.

No, I no yeti. I, Orok, the creature responded in a deep, gruff voice. She was taken aback that it spoke English, but she tried not to dwell on the thought. She knew that the most important thing was to have her questions answered so she understood the magnitude of the situation.

    A-are y-you going to k-kill me? W-what are y-you?

The creature did not reply, but grunted and continued to trek the treacherous ledge. Samantha gulped in terror and felt more tears well up in her eyes. She tried to understand the creature's intentions, but the only conclusion she could make was that it was a scavenger taking her back to its den to eat her. She only hoped it would put her out of her misery first.

After a journey that seemed like hours, the beast arrived at a small cave. Samantha could not move her head, but she looked around as much as she could in order to take in her surroundings. Her first instinct was to look for anything that she could use as a weapon to protect herself. Antlers were hung upon the wall, holding up a handful of animal skulls and a large club. She shook in fear as hundreds of thoughts flooded through her mind. She imagined what it would feel like to be bludgeoned by the massive, wooden weapon.

The creature snorted and placed Samantha's body on a bed of branches and animal pelts. She looked up at the leather-skinned beast, her green eyes brimming with unanswered questions. What comes next? Is it going to eat me?

Its bulky arms collected a pile of kindling and dropped it in the middle of a circle of rocks. It then picked up a rock and a small stick and began rubbing them together until they ignited. It tossed the fiery stick onto the woodpile and grunted once more before standing up and began walking into the depths of the cave. The creature was soon out of Samantha's line of vision, which was somehow much scarier than being close to it. She heard the sound of something being broken with great force and she felt her heart begin to race.

The beast had not been gone for very long before it approached
