One Way Ticket

Normally Tyra had fun with this ruse, but tonight she couldn’t get into the swing of things. She let Liam take the lead and tried desperately to stay planted in the here and now. Tyra relaxed into Liam’s arms; a deep sense of well being settled over her. She lightly stroked Liam’s waist-line with her fingertips. Liam’s muscles took on a more defined shape under her hands. His lips dropped closer to hers with every step they took. She snuggled into him. Amazingly content she thought about hooking up with Liam, thinking in some sad way she was missing out. She glanced up, ready for a kiss. The face that gazed back at her didn’t belong to Liam. It belonged to him. Tyra’s heart dropped into her stomach, all movement stopped. She wrenched herself free of the arms holding her so intimately and stormed out the front door.

Teen Spirit

Jade studied the hordes of weeping people that herded into the gymnasium. They were all crying because of her. Her lips curled into a sneer as she glanced around for her small group of friends. She couldn’t believe they weren’t here yet. Bored she floated down a couple of bleachers to eavesdrop on a group of her parents friends.

Calla Crossing

She sat on the pipeline, feet dangling in the air, hands clinging to the metal cable. Calla waited patiently for Broden to show up. Steadying herself to roll with the bridge in the slight breeze she gazed over the amazing view of the canyon before glancing down. Almost one-hundred feet below the river flowed between the canyon walls. How did she get here? Some days she had a hard time remembering. Some days her memory was crystal clear. Every day, her soul screamed for vengeance.
Today she sat searching her memories, wondering again how she got here.

Zack’s Promise

Zack shook his head to chase the memory away. He’d always had this drive to prove himself to his big brother. He didn’t know why.
The sun sat on the horizon, Zack needed to get home. He sighed and trudged at a snails pace along the trail. He never seemed to remember anything good about Isaac. Only bad memories. He’d taken what Isaac said to heart and never tried out for the track team. Maybe he’d try out at the beginning of his junior year. Coach always called him speedy and asked him to join every year, so far. He’d have to get off the anti-depressants, the Xanax, and begin training again. If he could just come up with the will power, and the energy to do it.
He sighed heavily, remembering his promise to Isaac. The depression pushed down harder on his shoulders. If everything went as planned he wouldn’t be alive long enough to become a Junior.

For you cannot stab a knife into my heart anymore. It has been broken one too many times

    One Way Ticket

THE INTERRUPTION HIT TYRA like a punch in the gut. Her heart kicked into overdrive as she gasped for air. Her hands began to vibrate into a shaking mess, and the numbness crawling up her legs let her know she was on her way to a full-blown panic attack. Tyra’s eyes flew up to the mountains where she pictured him to be, then back to her sweaty palms that were still barely clutching the vacuum cleaner. The vacuum wobbled as if telling her it wouldn’t be holding her up for much longer.

It can’t be true! She breathed. She’d buried him almost twenty years ago. She’d buried him deep.

He was gone. Long forgotten. She told herself over and over. But yet the intensity of his spirit continued to invade her space. Tyra screamed his name in her head over and over again. Never aloud. She’d never speak his name aloud. Too much pain could only come of it.

Tyra pushed back with her panic-stricken life force, trying to get his to release its grip on her. Why now? Why hadn’t he stayed buried? He belonged in the past. The long ago past!

Tyra’s mind wandered back to those carefree times, taking long shallow breaths she gradually let go of the vacuum before she broke it. No, she wouldn’t go there. That long ago place was behind her now. She needed to leave the past in the past.

Tyra shook her head, wanting to wipe out the memories, the pesky spider webs. He couldn’t be here, and she didn’t want to think about it anymore. He was gone… gone forever. At least to her.

His desire caressed her as it gently loosened its hold.

Tyra promised herself she would blank out her mind of his presence as she went back to work. Cleaning day how fun.

    ***

Later that night Tyra hopped into Liam’s car. She needed to escape. His little pinpricks of esprit hadn’t left her alone all day. The memories kept pushing into her mind. She’d pictured herself with a key and attempted to lock the door to his room inside her head. Similar to Jonsey packing all of Duddits memories behind a locked door to keep them away from Mr. Grey, in Stephen Kings Dreamcatcher. Only Tyra’s memories of him were already in one place. A place that she’d closed up and locked down tight long ago. If the memories remained locked behind a closed door they'd stay, right? The lock had somehow been picked. The door opened, and the memories continued to flood her mind. Tyra had blasted her music and kept cleaning. She tried to sing along with the songs, but the words evaded her. After Tyra finished cleaning her house she checked her e-mails. Unfortunately, she still had no idea what the e-mails persisted of. The words didn’t seem to penetrate the barrier of his energy or her brain for that matter. Tyra put together a lite dinner, but just the thought of food made her feel sick. Now it was time to try a social distraction.

Where are we headed? She asked with a fake grin plastered on her face. It was Liam's turn to pick their night out.

It’s a surprise, He replied cheerfully as he pulled out of Tyra’s driveway.

Tyra glanced over at Liam and wondered about her life. Liam was a great guy, good looking, loads of fun, and brilliant. Just about the best friend she’d ever had. Single too. For the umpteenth time, she asked herself why some woman hadn’t snagged him up yet. Tyra wouldn’t even attempt a more-than-friends relationship. They didn’t seem to click that way. And she didn’t want to ruin their friendship. Tyra thought about mentioning today to Liam. The words echoed through her mind. Never out loud. Never to anyone… She had to ride this out alone.

And why was she still single? Because there’s only one. They’d clicked, they’d clicked to the point that it scared her shitless. The past was the past, she reminded herself. Let it lie.

Liam didn’t notice her nervous jitters, content on the drive out of town and into a neighboring county.

Here we are. He downshifted and pulled into a parking lot.

Tyra grinned for real this time. Brady’s! She’d wanted to come here since the place opened. Now she was here! Brady's was an all in one brewery, bar, and restaurant and from what she understood all around fun time. When the local bands weren’t playing their pool room stood open and available to the costumers. This being a weeknight the pool tables were waiting for her to work her magic.

Tyra and Liam lived in a small town. Who was she kidding? Every town within a three hundred mile radius was deemed small. Small towns get boring sometimes and trying to find somewhere new to go continued to be a challenge. A challenge she and Liam took upon themselves. Now Liam was one up on her because she didn’t get the chance to bring him here first. Life had been hectic.

Liam held his finger in the air and slashed it downward as if marking an invisible scoreboard with a piece of chalk. He laughed, stepped out of the car, and gracefully opened the passenger side door for Tyra with a bow. Chivalry wasn’t dead. He clicked the key fob, locking the doors, and gently pushed Tyra in the direction of the pub.

Tyra thought Brady’s would be the perfect distraction she needed. Since they arrived on a weeknight the place remained uncrowded. They headed straight toward the bar, ordered some drinks, and looked over the menu. A one
