One Sunset
Bobby and I walked along a beach on the Oregon coast. We kicked over little clumps of purple seaweed to see if any creepy-crawly things were hiding under them.
It was near evening. We passed the time waiting for the sun to turn either red or yellow before sinking behind the spikes of rock and the sea. We wanted to experience the famous beach.
Bobby, what are you good for besides walking on the beach with your grandpa?
I asked.
I can dress myself,
said Bobby, giving me a smile that radiated out of his freckled round face.
No, no
I said, What I meant was, what do you do for other people that is worthy of your being here on earth?
I take out the rubbish to the trash can when mother tells me to,
said Bobby.
Is that all?
Oh no. I feed my dog Rufus. I pick up the mess in my room. I stop watching T.V and go to bed when I’m told.
When will you do something really great? Like something that will be written up in the newspapers. Some act that will benefit a lot of people.
Most likely when I get out of college,
said Bobby buttoning up his yellow sweater because the breeze was cooling as the sun neared the horizon.
We left the beach and scrambled to the top of a sand dune to get a better view of the sunset. Before us stood two dark spires called Haystack Rock
. The tide was in and the shallow water lapping the beach before us showed wavelets about a foot high. Beyond was a restless expanse of ocean ending in a thin line that marked the end of the earth; as far as our eyes were concerned?
The many colored ball of sun moved closer to the horizon. It showed a white center with two glowing circles of yellow radiating outward around it. A band of pinkish cloud lay over the horizon. A ray of color came across the shallow water lapping the beach. It came straight at Bobby and me.
Suddenly it appeared as if the sun stopped setting. Much like when you take a picture of such a sunset, print and frame it, and enjoy it forever. It simply hung in the sky.
Several minutes went by and still the sun did not move.
It’s stuck,
said Bobby.
Oh, it can’t be.
I said. It’s just giving us the appearance of lingering there before dropping into the ocean.
No, no, it’s stuck, and can’t go any further down. Does this mean there won’t be any night?
Bobby stood up. His chubby body seemed to tremble as if he was suddenly cold.
I also got up. Even though my tanned face was half hidden by a neatly trimmed white beard, I could sense that Bobby had noticed a growing question mark in
