I am Seaman James Lewis. When I joined the Navy I had one very specific goal in mind; more than anything else I wanted to be a Navy Seal. After basic training I volunteered for additional training in hand-to-hand combat before putting-in for a transfer to Seals training. By the time I was accepted it was only two weeks before Christmas; since the next training class wasn’t until after the first of the year I decided to spend my two weeks leave checking-out my new home; a Seals unit located on a base down by the gulf.

Once I checked myself onto new base I was told where my quarters were located. After about a ten-minute walk I finally found myself walking through the front door of my barracks. As soon as I entered the building I heard music and voices. While I was walking toward the break-room area I tried to prepare myself; since the seals were known to be a very tight-knit group I was a little nervous about being accepted into the unit.

I dropped my sea bag on the floor before I stepped into the room. The two guys playing cards in the lounge didn’t see me when I first walked in; in fact I was able to watch them play several hands of poker before one of them just happened to glance up and see me. His face froze for brief moment before he broke-out in a grin. As soon as he stood and held-out his hand, the other one turned, gave me a huge smile and stood-up.

I had a broad smile on my face when I walked over, shook their hands and introduced myself. The guy that had first seen me told me he was Petty Officer John Mason; the other introduced himself as Chief Alan Cain. After we sat-down at the table I found-out that the two of them had arrived yesterday and had been told to stay close to the base while the rest of the unit was away on Christmas leave.

When I asked the chief if he knew when the others would be returning he smiled and said: Gentlemen the three of us will have the place to ourselves for about two weeks. Somehow the records got screwed-up and they show us as being on leave; that means that according to the record we aren’t even here yet. In other words there won’t be anyone coming over to make sure we’re behaving ourselves.

After we gave each other a high-five the chief stood up and walked over to a small fridge in the corner. John and I both cheered when we saw him reach inside and pull-out three tall-boys; needless to say I can’t remember anything tasting as good as that first sip of ice-cold beer.  

I didn’t hesitate when they invited me to join the game; it was especially tempting when they told me it was penny-ante. Although we played for several hours I only ended-up three dollars in the hole when we decided to called it quits. After the game was over we sat and talked for quite some time. I learned that John and the chief had known each other for quite some time; in fact they had been stationed together for several years before being transferred here.

The conversation quickly turned to food when we realized none of us had eaten since breakfast. Since it probably wouldn’t have been a good idea to go to the chow hall, considering the number of beers we’d had, we decided to order pizza. After John placed the order we continued shooting the bull until chief heard someone pounding on the door. Since we had already given him our share of the pizza money he went to let the delivery guy in; thankfully, considering how hungry we were, he was back with the three large pizzas in just over five minutes.

None of us had realized how hungry we were until the pizzas disappeared in what had to be record time. After the food was gone we continued drinking until John stretched and told us he was going call it a day. I guess the power of suggestion was all it took; he had no sooner left when the chief and I decided to do the same.

After I found an empty bunk I quickly made my bed, undressed and crawled under the sheets; it couldn’t have been more than a couple of minutes later that my eyes began to close and I started to drift-off
