    Chapter One

It wasn’t her first love…but it was by far her greatest love. It was a love she never thought possible, and it was a love that made her so happy that at times she had to pinch herself to make sure she wasn’t dreaming. As she stood outside in the cold dark and stormy night, marveling at the mysteriousness of the total darkness and thinking of the secrets that it held, Victoria Wheeler found her mind drifting back to a time not so long ago.

On a picturesque smallholding, beautiful enough to inspire any painter, Victoria Wheeler was busy helping her father with the sheep. She was on horseback, and she sat in the saddle with quiet authority. The sun was already setting behind the huge imposing mountain, so she needed to stay alert to ensure that all the sheep went safely into the shed. She loved riding behind the sheep on her trusty old white mare, Gisela. Her father, Malcolm, rode on the left side of the sheep. His black stallion, Yoshi, who knew the drill by now, because he did this every day, seemed very bored indeed. Raphael, their German shepherd who seemed intrigued by the sheep, trotted tirelessly on their right side. Victoria smiled inwardly. Despite their harsh circumstances where every day was a battle for survival and the cost of living was rising, she felt that she belonged here.

About a year ago, she and her father moved to this fifteen hectares smallholding which was situated in the Eastern Cape, roughly about fifty kilometers from the city. She loved the great outdoors, and she loved the fact that she could saddle up and go horse riding whenever she felt like it. She watched fondly as the last little lamb followed its mother into the huge shed. The lambs were all so adorable and cute, and they always managed to tug at her heartstrings. She and her father dismounted from their horses, and her father locked the shed securely with a padlock. Then they led their horses to the nearby stables where they each took off their own horse’s saddle and bridle. After that Malcolm carried some lucerne into each horse’s stable, and then he filled their separate buckets with water. When Gisela got a whiff of the lucerne, she trotted into her stable first. Yoshi trotted into his stable afterwards, and after Malcolm made sure that both horses were content, he locked the stables with padlocks too. They then walked to the modest old farmhouse which was not too far away. It was an energetic walk and they both got extreme enjoyment and pleasure out of it. As they walked, they heard a bird chirping in a nearby tree. It sounded like the perfect music to Victoria’s ears, and she smiled happily. Do you know, father, we’ve been here for almost a year, and we haven’t come up with the right name for this smallholding yet, she said light heartedly.

Malcolm shrugged his shoulders. Then he said smilingly, I’m sure if we put our heads together, we’ll come up with a fitting name. We just need to think for a while. I know in my heart that moving here was one of the best decisions I have ever made. It’s so peaceful here and I’m happier than I’ve ever been. This smallholding was worth every penny.

Victoria smiled brightly at her father. Then she said, You’re so right, father. I’m happy here too. This smallholding has a wonderful charm, and it has already worked its magic on me.

Raphael started barking excitedly when they got to the front door, and Victoria unlocked it. Both she and her father looked at him affectionately, because he knew that as soon as his work with the sheep was done, he got his food. Just thinking about his food set him off on a happy barking spree.

After giving Raphael his food, which he ate with gusto, Victoria couldn’t seem to make up her mind about what to cook for dinner. So she called from the kitchen to her father, What would you like for dinner tonight?

Malcolm, who was already seated in his favorite armchair in the lounge in front of the television, didn’t have to think long. For him, that question was definitely no brain teaser. Macaroni and cheese would be nice, he answered.

Victoria smiled to herself. Somehow she knew that he was going to say macaroni and cheese. It was his favorite dish. Macaroni and cheese it is, she called back, and she got busy right away. Cooking and baking has always been a favorite hobby of hers. She enjoyed it tremendously. After Raphael had eaten, Victoria let him go out through the front door. He went straight to his huge dog basket in the corner of the veranda, and after he settled himself in nicely for the night, he almost immediately fell asleep. Some watch dog you are, laughed Victoria, while she closed the front door. She went back to preparing dinner.

After more or less forty minutes, she carried two plates of macaroni and cheese through to the lounge on a huge tray. She put it down on the coffee table, and as Malcolm helped himself to his plate of Macaroni and cheese, she quickly went back to the kitchen to fetch their glasses of orange juice. When she returned, she sat down on the cream colored couch with her plate of macaroni and cheese on her lap. She and Malcolm watched television as they ate. They drank their orange juice, and after they finished their macaroni and cheese, Victoria stood up and placed the empty plates back on the tray, including the two glasses. She carried the tray back to the kitchen and put it on the kitchen table. Then she returned to the lounge, sat back down and continued watching television. They watched television for more or less four hours, and eventually Malcolm stood up. He kissed Victoria goodnight, and then he went straight to bed.

Victoria thought about going to bed, but she didn’t feel sleepy, so she pushed the thought aside in her mind. Instead, she went to the kitchen and made herself a cup of rejuvenating rosehip tea. She went out through the front door and walked to a chair on the veranda. As she sat down, she let out a little sigh. The night seemed so peaceful and there were a whole lot of stars in the sky. She was filled with wonder, because there was so much beauty in the quietness of the night, and it touched her soul in a special way. Raphael was still fast asleep, and with the veranda light still on, she sat there alone with her thoughts. She thought about her father and how much she loved him, and about his decision to move here. She thought about how much she loved it here and she thought about the sheep and the two horses. Horse riding had become her passion, and every time she went for a ride with her horse, exhilaration swept through her being like a huge wave. It felt wonderful. As she sat there, she looked at Raphael. He hadn’t been with them for long, but there was already a strong bond of love between her and the dog. It was an unbreakable bond.

    Chapter Two

As she drank her rosehip tea, she felt a deep longing in her heart to let her thoughts of the past run free. She felt an urge to remove those thoughts from her mind, and she wanted those thoughts to shrink into oblivion, but it wasn’t possible. She would always remember. She took another sip of her tea, and then she allowed her thoughts to go back to little over a year ago. She and her father were living in a lovely house in a middle class suburb in the city. Her mother, Elaine, had left her father five years previously for a very rich businessman. Victoria had no idea what business he was in, nor did she bother to ask. She was too worried about her father. He took the news of his wife’s betrayal very hard. It was a very traumatic experience for him, and he fought very hard to get a little sunshine back into his life again. Victoria helped him every step of the way. Her heart went out to her fifty five year old father, and she did everything in her power to help put the smile back on his face. With him being a retired school teacher he had a lot of time to reflect and with Victoria’s help they came up with the brilliant idea that he would restore old furniture that he bought at auctions and resell it again at a profit. It was an idea that worked very well. It took his mind off his failed marriage completely.

Victoria was a waitress in a restaurant for almost two years.
