SCENE 1
Curtains are closed. The sound of a school ground full of laughing and children talking, is played for the audience. The curtains open. The stage is empty except for a fake building in the middle of the stage running to stage left. It shows the corner of a brick building with one window. The audience cannot see through the window. This wall should be L
shaped with the length facing the audience. On stage right in the back corner is a tree. SONIA enters from stage right. She walks fast until she reaches centre stage, then stops. She is dressed in her school uniform. A very greyish shade of green dress that reaches her knees, a maroon jacket, black school shoes and white socks. Her long black hair is in the standard ponytail. She has the most striking bright blue eyes. She is a delicate girl of average height.
SONIA: (She sighs loudly. She’s frustrated. She looks from side to side on stage and into the audience. She is looking for someone.) Where are they? (Takes two steps this way and then moves back into position.)
With the sound of children on the school grounds still in the background – not too loud – another sound enters. It’s a vehicle approaching, it slows down and stops close by. The driver gets out of the vehicle. TOM enters onto the stage from stage left in front of the building. Only just so the audience can see him. SONIA is still looking for someone. She glances in TOM’S direction. She remains in centre stage, hands on her hips.
TOM: (Cautious.) Good afternoon.
SONIA: (Answers irritably.) Good afternoon.
TOM is dressed in a loose dark blue t-shirt, faded jeans and sneakers. He has dark brown hair, short and gelled into a stylish look. He is well built and comfortable in his skin. He towers over SONIA slightly. He emits an air of calm and confidence. He stays close to stage left. He turns around facing the curtains. He slightly ducks in between the curtains. The sound of the back of the vehicle being opened is played. TOM picks up a heavy box, turns around and walks closer to SONIA in centre stage. A few steps from her he puts down the box.
TOM: (He straightens and faces SONIA.) What’s wrong? Are you looking for someone?
SONIA: (Sighs again dramatically.) Actually, yes I am.
TOM: (He smiles at SONIA, tilts his head and crosses his arms across his chest. Teasingly he asks.) Imaginary friends perhaps?
SONIA: (She is completely focused on TOM now.) What? No! I’m looking for my friends. Actual people... (She shakes her head unbelievingly. She frowns at him, crosses her arms defensively. Absentmindedly she adds.) I’m not supposed to talk to strangers in the first place.
TOM: (Still smiling, he inches a bit closer towards her.) Then it’s a good thing I’m not a stranger, just a courier. Tom Wilson. And you are? (He extends his hand to shake hers.)
SONIA: (She hesitates, glances at his hand like it’s a snake that will strike her. She doesn’t shake his hand.) Sonia Clemons.
TOM: (He drops his hand and shoves both his hands in his jean pockets.) Well beautiful lady, where is the reception?
SONIA: (She blushes, lowers her face for a second but quickly look back up at him, smiling.) Around the corner that way.
SONIA gestures for him to go into the building, through the short wall not directly facing the audience. He follows her indication and sees the entry he was looking for.
TOM: Ah, thank you beautiful lady... (He hesitates for a second, looking at her. He makes the decision to ask.) Will you still be here when I get back?
SONIA: (She’s completely surprised. Then she tries to tease.) No way, forget it. Besides, I’m still looking for my friends, remember?
TOM: (He picks up the heavy
