The story revolves around an estranged couple who happen to have erased each other from their memories. The screenplay is written by Charlie Kaufman and the movie is directed by Michel Gondry.

The nonlinear narrative explores the nature of memory and romantic love, thus making the movie a science fiction, a psychological thriller.

The movie is reported to have grossed more than eighty million dollars worldwide after its release on 19th March, 2004.

The movie won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. Winslet was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress.

The title Eternal Sunshine on the Spotless Mind is a quotation from Eloisa to Abelard, written by Alexander Pope. It is said that Charlie Kaufman took three years to complete the screenplay for the movie.

During the writing of the screenplay, there used to be frequent creative dialogue between the writer and director. The producer of the movie, Steve Golin, describes Kaufman as the most imaginative writer that he has had the opportunity to work with.
