Chapter Two: Plot Overview
Before the main story begins, there is a brief epigraph. The epigraph discusses a deadly and mysterious illness. The story begins in the mythical country of Kenettra. Adelina Amouteru, the protagonist, is a sixteen years old girl. She is in a prison cell.
It transpires that she has been accused of murdering her father, Sir Martino Amouteru. She remembers the night in a flashback. It is the night of her father’s death. It transpires that Adelina has a kind of dysfunctional relationship with her sister, Violetta.
It is revealed that the sisters have survived the mysterious disease that is mentioned in the epigraph. Now the disease is known as the blood fever. Adelina is the only one who has the marks of the disease on her body.
Her father happens to have arranged to sell Adelina off to an older tradesman. She does not want to be sold off like cattle. She runs away. However, she can’t go very far. Her father catches up to her in the storm. There is a fight between father and daughter During their struggle, Adelina produces black nightmarish figures from the earth.
Her father is startled to see those figures. The make him crash into his horse. His horse kills him. He is not killed by Adelina.
Adelina is now in the prison cell, waiting her unjust judgment day in the Dalia prison. Enzo Valenciano visits Adelina in the prison. Enzo happens to have received a letter via dove from someone named The Messenger.
Reading the letter, Enzo does not show any reaction, but he decides to move out.
The narrative comes back to Dalia. Time is running out for Adelina. The Inquisition Axis is Kanettra’s police force. The members of the force come into her cell and bring her out.
A jeering crowd is waiting outside to see her execution. Teren Santoro is the Lead Inquisitor of Kenettra. He is there to set Adelina’s pyre on fire. Before she is burned, Adelina makes use of her powers again. She creates an illusion of locusts in the sky.
The Inquisitors are distracted by the locusts. Suddenly, a masked figure is seen on the stage. The figure eventually rescues Adelina.
It transpires that the masked figure is the mysterious Enzo from the earlier chapter. He informs Adelina that he and his supporters have rescued and brought her to Estenzia, the port capital city of Kenettra.
Enzo begins to show Adelina his powers over fire. He informs Adelina that he is the leader of a group of Young Elites. They are called the Dagger Society. He invites her to join them to punish all those people who have wronged her. Adelina agrees to join the group.
She is given ample rest. Enzo’s right hand man, Raffaele Laurent Bessette, begins to train her. It transpires that Raffaele is The Messenger. He was the person who had altered Enzo to Adelina’s presence in Dalia.
Her first exercise shows that Adelina’s powers resonate with fear, passion, ambition, and fury. Raffaele sees these powers. He is alarmed. He tells Enzo to kill Adelina before she becomes a serious threat to them all.
Enzo does not agree with Raffaele and decides to keep Adelina around.
The following morning, Raffaele takes her to meet the other Daggers. They are also going to test her.
Star Thief and Windwalker are two friendly Daggers, but Spider is quite hostile to Adelina. She realizes that she still does not have full control over her powers. However, she can conjure up illusions when she feels that she is in danger. Enzo feels that there is something in Adelina and allows her training to be continued.
At this point,
