Chapter One: Introduction
The Testing

There is a competition for seats in the University. She competes with her fellow peers from all across the United Commonwealth.
The Testing
is a young adult novel. It falls into the dystopian genre. The setting of the story is the post-nuclear war America that is now called United Commonwealth in the story.
When the book was published, there were several other dystopian novels in the market, but The Testing
stood out because of its writing style. The author has approached the dystopian genre from a new point of view.
The author had seen violent competition among the students in her own life when they competed to get admitted to reputed colleges and universities. She has based the story on the idea of fierce competition in the field of education.
The book was immediately listed on the VOYA Top Shelf for Middle School Readers. It is a highly popular book among its young adult readers.
Chapter Two: Plot Overview
Malencia ‘Cia’ Vale graduates from school of the Five Lakes Colony. Consequently, she is selected to participate in the Testing. It happens to be a very difficult process through which young adults are selected to attend the University.
When she gets the news, she is delighted at first, but when her father tells her about his own vague memories of the Testing, she becomes alert. Her father recalls explosions, screams, and deaths. He tells his daughter that she must not trust any of the candidates.
Cia is allowed to carry three items from home. She eventually takes her brother Zeen’s transit communicator. She believes that the gadget with help her on the way.
Her classmates Tomas, Zandri, and Malachi are also accompanying Cia. Michal Gallen is their testing official. They leave Five Lakes Colony for Tosu City, the capital of the United Commonwealth.
The United Commonwealth is what is left of the United States after the nuclear war and unprecedented natural disasters. Cia leans that there are hidden camera to record their every word and action.
She decides to present her best behavior at all times. She tells Tomas about her resolve. Both of them agree to look out for each other over the course of the Testing.
They eventually reach Tosu City. There are 108 other candidates who will be competing for only 20 open seats at University.
In the first round there are several written exams.
