- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5i have not read this in a while... but i still remember it and all i have to say is OMG..... love, love loved it....
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I liked the idea of this book and really hoped to enjoy it. I thought that the premise was very interesting and loved the idea of having different characters from other novels get together like they did. However, I was not drawn into the story line as much as I hoped. I found it that I was taking long breaks from reading it and wasn't that invested in what happened. I found it to be unique but not my cup of tea.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This is an interesting book but I had a problem with having so many main characters. It was difficult to keep them straight especially those with the same last name. I also don't care for books that start out with a story that is different than what the main story is about. I think that the prince's background could have been told as part of the main story and much briefer. I did enjoy the story line but I wish that the story could have been finished in the book, not to continue in a second book.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The writer is obviously a reader. Many of the characters are named after famous characters in classic literature, like Oliver Twist and Peco Bill but the writer made them all her own. The story of good VS evil is timeless and although there are some adult undertones it is very sutle. The writing is vivid and the interaction between the characters is compelling. There is a religious or faith subtext in this book which I don't see any many books these days especially not fantasy ones but I really thought it added to the story. I look forward to future books by this author.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Think along the lines of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, just with different characters drawn from Victorian fiction. This time, there's Prince Florizel, Oliver Twist, Pecos Bill, Mowgli, and other characters brought together in the Alexander Legacy Company to fight evil. This first in the series is written from the perspective of exiled Prince Florizel of Bohemia, whose throne was stolen when he was a young adult by his nefarious uncle. They are fighting their arch-nemesis, known only as Dodge, who seems to control all of the criminal activity in London and perhaps even elsewhere. There is a very strong Christian element to the characters' work, much saving of souls and winning people over to Christ. The premise of this book is a good one. However, I felt that there wasn't enough explanation as to why these particular individuals were chosen. For example, there are several mentions that Prince Florizel, after leaving Bohemia, fought against evil forces, but it is never made clear exactly what that meant. What exactly did he do that brought him to the attention of the Alexander Legacy Company? The addition of a decided steampunk element (Oliver Twist is a genius inventor, and of course, there are automatons involved) was a nice touch. The novel contained an excerpt from the second in the series, which is written from Oliver Twist's perspective. Just reading that excerpt got me incredible confused having just read over 300 pages from Florizel's perspective, but perhaps by the time I read the second novel that will have worn off.
