A Slave to the Fantasy, Part 9 - Rebecca Lee

    Chapter 1—Depth and Width

The rainy season of 1991 in the Metro Manila area was particularly hazardous for a city with too many people and not enough quality infrastructure.  It seemed almost a daily occurrence that some part of the massive metropolis was flooding with people losing everything.

In the central city where the richest people lived, Isabella and Michael Blake each rose steadily up the ladder of notoriety for their wealth, connections, social aplomb, and very open support of the poorest of poor children in the area.

Dr. Blake was an American by birth but educated in many places. But the Philippines were home. He made his professional name in the field of psychiatry focusing on addiction counseling and also his real love doing Court-appointed psychiatric counseling.  These cases gave him completely uncensored and highly valuable insights into the criminal mind.

Over time he developed respect for the brilliance he encountered among the accused rapists, arsonists, organized crime figures, and outright murderers.  It was an eye-opener to Dr. Michael Blake just how many crimes went unsolved and would likely never be solved.

The utter thrill of the cat and mouse became an addiction for Dr. Blake.

By 1991 he could count himself among the criminal as he became involved in low-level sex trafficking. Years prior to that, when he was considered a brilliant young upwardly mobile thinker in academia, he met Isabella Sarmiento at a cultural mixer.

She was a noted socialite among the native elite on Luzon island. But she was even more famous for her series of victories in pageants in both the Philippines and throughout Asia. She also modeled for fashion magazines and was perpetually active in philanthropy, particularly causes related to taking care of poor orphan children/

Orphans were a rampant problem and she made it a point to be out front working to solve it. Her motives were more self-promotion and positioning herself for greater connections than altruism. but when the time was tallied up, she was putting lots of it into helping others.

She was fashionable, energetic but with quiet class, and uncommonly statuesque tall with features reminiscent of a young Imelda Marcos (still considered by many the most beautiful woman in the Philippines).  Isabella was a dominant figure in any room she was in. When the occasion was formal and she could form something form fitting and red or black to offset her silky jet black hair and porcelain doll features, she was positively enthralling to look at.

When Dr. Michael Blake saw her enter the room, he may not have felt what most of the other men in the room felt, but he sensed something rare and powerful. Something he knew that if he had it, could enhance his endless ambitions and goals.

When she sat down with her brother at a reserved table, Dr. Blake, the dashing and eligible young American doctor was right there seeking a dance (even though at the time there was no music or dancing taking place.)

She told a female friend the next morning after her yoga class she found him to be the handsomest man who had ever spoken to her. Unlike the approaches of other men, whom she freely toyed with and denied, Isabella readily accepted his invitation. Sensing right from the beginning that if she didn’t, there wouldn’t be a second request from this man who clearly had plenty of options.

    ...

The wedding of the brilliant dashing young American doctor and the pageant princess of the Philippines took place eight months later and was one of the highlights of the society calendar of that season.

He sought prestige, and more than anything power. Having a famous, beautiful and well connected native woman on his arm would enhance him and his goals in ways being single never could.

In the back row of the ornate Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church near the University where Blake taught was Professor Richard Baldwin, Dr. Blake’s closest colleague and unabashed flunky. To this event, like every other requiring a guest, Baldwin brought his handicapped sister. It was the perfect cover for a man who had no interest in the romantic company of women.

As he watched the elaborate beautiful ceremony, Dr. Baldwin could felt like he was an after thought. The man he loved, adored, and cared for personally and professionally, was marrying a woman he didn't love and could never satisfy.

That night, Michael Blake and his wife made love in their honeymoon suite near the church. Their nearly two-week honeymoon at a private beachfront villa on a remote interior central island of the Philippines saw them make love less than half the days.

All told, that two weeks included the majority of the intimacy which would take place for the remainder of their well over two decades as man and wife. For Dr. Michael Blake, his actual lust and needs were not tempered or satiated by pleasures of the flesh, even from one of Asia’s most beautiful women who was always eager to please her man behind closed doors.

The question that would leave people looking back at the whole affair years later long after they were both at their peak of power: what truly did exist in their hearts?

The one living breathing product to the world was sure she knew the answer.

Tara Diaz came by her answer hard, but she never really wanted to come by anything any other way.

    ...

Overall, the marriage worked as long as it was never required that Blake stretch too far into conventional sexual fulfillment for Isabella. Ultimately Isabella would want a child or multiple children.

This was something she never dreamed would be a problem. Michael loved young people and made that clear not just in word but deed during their relatively brief engagement.

But after they were married, he had only enough interest in her physically to avoid raising red flags. Those first couple years it was only his pride which kept him from suggesting she run around with one of the young trainers at their health club.

His life was about growing his relationship with young people for his own ends.

He had grand plans but nowhere near the wealth or influence to carry them out. So however he could, he pursued wealth and influence.

As Blake saw it, the clock of his life was ticking. What he needed to accomplish was not happening honestly and on a Doctor’s salary. It was not happening publishing journals for academia.

He looked to crime to speed things up. He had no fear because he believed he was smarter than even the smartest criminals he had analyzed.

    ...

When Isabella’s desires to have children could no longer be pushed aside by ignoring, or with excuses about his health, he knew he needed a bold move to put the matter to rest.

His trick was to create the
