1. The Characteristics of a Samoyed Dog
––––––––
The name Samoyed has originated from the name Samoyedic people in Siberia. A Samoyed is a working dog. They came from Siberia at the end of the 19th century. These nice big dogs are meant for herding and for pulling sleds. Male Samoyed dogs usually weigh from 45 to 65 pounds, and females usually weigh from 35 to 50 pounds. The height for a male Samoyed is about 23.5 inches and females height is about 21 inches. Samoyed dogs are usually white, white & biscuit, or cream colored. Their life span is about 12 to 14 years of age on average.
The Samoyed dog is a very friendly dog. They tend to bark a lot in the presence of a stranger. These dogs get along with children, so they would be a perfect family pet to own. Samoyed's are very intelligent dogs, and they are easy to train.
It is not a good idea to leave them alone for a long period of time because they can become bored and get very destructive. They can get along with animals, like cats, if raised together while they are a puppy and kitten. They are very peaceful dogs, but can also be very active. They are very loyal and friendly dog to have in your household.
When it comes to grooming, the Samoyed's need to be extensively groomed. They are heavy shedders. The Samoyed's coat needs to be frequently brushed. They don’t need to be bathed very often, just once every month or so. When bathing them, make sure you use clean water, and soak their whole coat, makes sure you soak them in water before, because of their thick coats. You should brush their teeth a couple of times a week to prevent any gum disease. Also remember to trim their nails to avoid tears on their paws.
When it comes to training them, they are very intelligent. But you have to be patient. You should train them consistently so that they learn.
When it comes to exercising them, you should take them on walks daily. When the weather is hot you shouldn’t exercise them rigorously. They are better in cool weather and climates. If you plan to exercise them in warmer weather, make sure that you hydrate them so that they don’t get overheated, because of their thick coats, they prefer to be out of the heat.
A genetic disease that a Samoyed may have is known as Samoyed Hereditary Glomerulopathy, which is more severe in a male. The disease starts to progress after three months of life. After three months the dog becomes lethargic, then renal failure starts to happen. After fifteen months it usually results in death. Other health issues that a Samoyed has are common among all canines, like Hip Dysplasia. It is a very good idea to have your puppy get regular veterinarian check ups.
2. What You Should Know About Puppy Teeth
There is no doubt about it, puppies are going to chew on things! Dogs will have 28 baby teeth, and 42 permanent teeth. When a puppy is roughly 2 to 3 weeks old, their baby teeth start to come in. All their baby teeth should be in place by roughly 8 weeks of age.
The puppy’s new teeth are very tiny and sharp, and will hurt your fingers when they get a hold of them. Most mothers will start to wean their babies at 5 to 6 weeks old.
Your puppy’s baby teeth will start to come out around 8 to 12 weeks of age. By roughly 8 months old, your dog’s permanent teeth should all be in. You should make sure that all baby teeth are out, so that a tooth does not get left in, and another one comes in and crowds the space, and also gives your dog pain. You would need to visit the vet if you see this happening.
Your puppy is going to want to chew on something, just like a real baby, their teeth are coming in, and they want to relieve some of the pain. It is good for them to chew, to help the teeth come thru. You would want to get some appropriate chew items to help them.
You could start to train your dog to have their teeth brushed. You can pick up doggie tooth supplies at your local pet store usually, and get down and dirty and brush your doggy’s teeth. Rawhide chews are an excellent source of good tooth hygiene, as they are good for your dog’s teeth, and can help take off build up plaque, and dogs usually love it also!
A lot of puppies and dogs end up getting human food usually from the weakest link in the family. If your dog is under the table, they usually will go to the person they think will mostly likely give them some food scraps. If you do,
