    Chapter One

    Whitney Wallace had just turned eight years old. This meant that she was now in the eight year old club in her class. She was one of the last students in her class to turn eight. Now she could hang with the older kids, and talk about older kid stuff.

    For months she had been counting down the days until her birthday. It took a ridiculously long time to arrive. Now that it was over she was ready to start her life as an eight year old. She spent a little extra time choosing her clothes before school. Then, at breakfast her mother offered her a bowl of her favorite marshmallow cereal.

    No thank you. I'll just have half a grapefruit and a cup of coffee. She requested her breakfast in a very grown-up voice.

    I'll get you the grapefruit, but how about some juice instead of coffee? Her mother walked over to the counter to grab a grapefruit.

    I need coffee Mom. I have a lot to do today.

    Her mother turned to look at her with a smile. Whitney, I'm sorry, but you're not old enough to have coffee. How about some warm milk?

    Fine. Whitney sighed.

    She scrunched up her nose as her mother set the grapefruit down in front of her. Whitney didn't actually like grapefruit. But it seemed like a mature thing to eat now that she was eight. She tried a little bit. Her lips squished together and her tongue poked out. It was so sour!

    Maybe a bagel instead? Her mother offered.

    Yes, please, she responded, still making faces.

    Whitney chowed down on her bagel. She was so excited to get to school today. They had a special fundraiser coming up soon. All of the schools were going to take
