About this ebook

Timely Escape is a short story prequel to Icy Silence, Book #3 in the Megan Scott/Michael Elliott Mystery series.

Megan Scott's car takes a hit—literally—when a pedestrian is shoved onto the hood. Even worse, the man is one of two notorious prison escapees on the loose in Montreal. Megan chases the felon through the Old Port, convinced that her photographic evidence will lead to his capture.

Just as the escapee disappears aboard a yacht in the marina, another man forces Megan aboard the same yacht at knifepoint. Gagged, tied, and terrified, she witnesses a murder.

Will she be next?

    Timely Escape - Sandra Nikolai

    1

Michael rushed into the living room and almost tripped over the coffee table as he reached for the remote. There was a prison break north of Montreal! He clicked on the TV. Derrick called to say the late night news is carrying the story.

As an investigative journalist, Michael always had the inside scoop, this time from Derrick Ferguson, his boss at The Gazette. Eager to learn more about this recent development, I perched on the leather sofa next to him.

A breaking-news banner stretched along the bottom of the screen as mug shots of two unshaven men came into view. The announcer stated:

Two inmates escaped from a medium-security jail north of Montreal this evening. Daniel Plouffe and Pierre Favreau, members of the notorious Hells Angels biker gang, are assumed to be heading to Montreal. They are considered armed and dangerous. Both men were recently transferred from a maximum-security jail and were scheduled to appear in court on Monday, August 11, on drug-dealing gangsterism and first-degree murder charges.

I peered at the mug shots. Daniel Plouffe’s face was long and narrow. An ugly scar ran down one side of his face from his eye to his mouth. Pierre Favreau had small dark eyes and a bulbous nose set into a round face. Both men were in their early forties. The Hells Angels had a worldwide reputation for narcotics trafficking, violent murders, illegal gambling, intimidation, and theft, among other criminal activities. These two escapees looked every bit the part.

I shuddered involuntarily. They give me the creeps.

The coverage over, Michael clicked off the TV. They’re members of the same chapter of Hells Angels that the cops arrested in a cocaine bust four months ago—thanks to info I gave them from one of my sources. And now they’ve escaped. Damn! He shook his head.

How does anyone manage to break out of jail—even a medium-security one? I asked him.

The Hells Angels must have had inside connections. He gazed at the floor, a tiny muscle pulsating along his jaw—a sign that something else was on his mind.

Okay, spill the beans, I said. I have a feeling you’re already planning your next move.

    He
