Designer Crime
Special Interest’s Profit Machine
Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely.
—Lord Acton, a British historian of the late Nineteenth and early Twentieth centuries
Designer crime is legislation designed to have all the earmarks of traditional law with the exception that designer laws are ‘genetically altered’ by special interest dollars not to interfere with business as usual and, therefore, do little to fix the problem for which they are created. One body of designer legislation is the Hard On Crime
laws enacted since 1980. Publicized as a War On Violent Crime, a War On Illegal Drugs, and a War On Drinking & Driving and, like Weapons Of Mass Destruction in Iraq, they are all political fictions served up as an immediate threat.
On the face of it these laws are coated with righteous indignation. Mandatory Minimum Sentencing and Truth In Sentencing laws serve a useful purpose to society, particularly one programmed with chronic anxiety, but when the data is examined, these laws do more harm than good. The reason is simple, the wars they exist to fuel simply do not exist, have never existed, and will never exist. They are political fictions.
So what does designer crime actually accomplish? Of course, puts a lot of Americans, millions of us, into the legal system, and I’ll examine the profit motive driving that. Designer crimes create billions of dollars in tax receipts
