    Chapter 1 – Moving On

Anna Metcalf got out of the car in front of the only café on Main Street in Keystone, a small town in west central South Dakota. The day before, she had made a spur of the moment decision to visit her friend, Kaylie Stone. Before she could talk herself out of it, she called Kaylie to make sure it was a good time to visit, booked the flight from New York into Rapid City and rented a car.

Anna met Kaylie some time ago at a restaurant in New York and they became instant friends. Kaylie invited Anna to visit any time. Now, six months after Anna’s husband had passed away, she decided to make the journey. Kaylie was delighted and told her she could stay as long as she liked.

The ranch where Kaylie lived was still miles away, but Anna stopped to eat because she didn’t want to impose on Kaylie as her due-date was near. Anna thought this would be a good time to visit because she could help Kaylie with the baby.

Kaylie lived on the Rolling Stone, a sprawling ranch in the foothills of the Black Mountains of South Dakota with her husband Heath and his older brother, Luke. Heath and Luke inherited the ranch from their parents who had inherited it from theirs. It sounded wonderful when Kaylie told her about it.

Now, as Anna transitioned from a high-powered, high-stress job with a New York accounting firm, she thought the ranch would be a great place to unwind and think about what she would do with her future. Everything had always fallen into place when Steven was alive.

Steven died in a car accident after a disagreement he and Anna had. He had left the house angry and T-boned a car with his SUV. Everyone had lived, but the four-year-old boy in the back seat had permanent injuries. He would be in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. When Anna found out that the insurance company refused to pay his medical bills until after the case had settled, she had her lawyer anonymously donate Steven’s life insurance to the family.

Anna had started the argument that caused Steven to storm out that night and she felt guilty for the little boy’s injuries. The money was the least she could do to try to make it right.

It wasn’t until a few months after Steven was gone that Anna realized they had been living his dream and she was simply going along with it. They had known each other throughout high school and married right after college. She found that she didn’t know what she wanted for herself and it was time she found out.

Anna walked into the restaurant and immediately felt at home. The rich scent of fresh cooked apple pie wafted from the oven in the kitchen. Anna walked up to the counter and sat on one of the rustic bar stools. The walls, hung with pictures of locals and their achievements, only added to the homey atmosphere. There was a little league baseball team with their state trophy and an elderly couple with a seniors bowling league ribbon. There were wedding pictures
