Tower of Deception - Robert Steacy
Tower of Deception
Murder and deceit became the essence of her tale, something that I could not ignore. The treacherous nature of the retelling exposed the blackness that became her soul. I was to be the sounding board; the distress signal that she hoped would alarm the world of her plight. But there I was, wishing that she would refrain from any further detail of this sordid saga. Instead, she would continue without concern for my belief or her own safety and welfare. It only seemed fitting that the city had become engulfed in long days of dense fog, fueling the heavy hearted story that consumed her. It was a story that she needed to tell, and I was to be her muse, her siren of hope.
There were many parts and pieces of Charlize Buchanan’s account that seemed accurate and believable, others that felt drawn up and executed as if rehearsed. I knew that there was nothing I could do, not yet anyway. I could not print such a wild enactment of something that was born from a ‘B’ movie. I would be laughed from my office and made to cover such unimportant events as the current refuse maintenance strike. It was then that I knew there was only one man that could unravel this woman’s desperate hopes of finding her missing love alive, and yet I was hesitant to bring her to him.
Sterling Quinn had gone missing for almost five days when he suddenly reappeared at my door with his two best friends in hand, cheap whiskey and a tawdry maiden direct from the streets of Broadway. I had no other choice but to allow him into my small home as he swilled his drink and filled the room with passionate remarks and kisses while embracing his young lady for the evening. The idea that she quickly became half naked, dancing wildly with her large laboratory created breasts bouncing as if a boxer’s speed bag in the middle of my living room, only made the sight of this back street love fest more unappealing to the sobered mind. It was only good fortune that Quinn passed out before she disrobed completely while ripping his putrid shirt from his bare chest expecting more tasteless sensuality from my irrational friend. Before losing all composure as well as my excellently prepared lunch from earlier in the day, I, of course, politely suggested she cover her exposed body parts and leave promptly. After paying her a larger sum than I suspect he promised, she rushed out the door to catch a taxi back to whatever unkempt place he pulled her from.
When Quinn awoke from his self-induced stupor, he bellowed out as if in terrible physical pain. Only moments went by before appearing to be of his right mind, as he recounted a resounding revelation about the untimely death of his parents. The shocking effects of which never seemed to wear from the genius of his detective presumptions. No matter the day’s events, there was always the sense that he was consumed, yet unusually collected by the tragic incident. Never completely giving in to the haunting effects, until he would fall from grace by drinking measurable amounts from his bottle of choice, all at once, creating a monstrous image of his own tortured soul.
So, it was with reluctance that I decided to introduce another woman into his life that experienced similar torturous effects as he, unfortunately, before I was able to discern his current state of mind and resilience from yet another step into his darkened past.
Harrison Reed! My dear friend,
remarked Sterling Quinn, as we sat
