    Introduction

Based on the saying that a picture is worth a thousand words, 1000 Words is a project that combines a major in photography with a minor in creative writing. I have long been interested in Photoshop and photo-manipulation, and have therefore geared much of my photographic work towards photo illustration. I photograph my own images, and then combine them in Photoshop to create fantastical illustrations. I also have a strong interest in writing and the workings of the book publishing industry. Thus, the venture of creating a book with both my short stories and my book cover art is a logical combination of my photography and writing interests.

This project features ten short stories, each approximately one thousand words in length, that are each accompanied by an illustrated book cover design. The purpose of this project is to familiarize myself with book cover design and photographic illustration, as well as completing and editing short stories. By creating a portfolio of book covers, and being familiar with the self-publishing process, I will be able to better market my work to self-published authors and small presses.

The end result of this project is printed in book format, as well as in eBook format. In order to fully explore the technological processes of publication, I have self-publish the completed book. This is because I anticipate many of my initial clients being self-publishers, and understanding the e-publishing side of the business will help me provide better service.

I'd like to thank those who helped me in this process. First, my parents and grandparents. They have supported me not only through college, but my whole life. They have been supportive of my creative endeavors, and encouraged me to follow my dreams. I'd also like to thank my fiancé, Isaac. He may be critical of my work, but he's often right about what he sees when I ask him about my latest photo. I'd like to thank my mentor, Professor
