    PROLOGUE

    Curtain rises to the small home of the recently widowed KEITA and her daughter MOIRA. Keita stands over a simmering cauldron of milk over the hearth fire. She stirs with a long handled wooden spoon, the sleeves of her simple green woollen tunic rolled up neatly and out of the way as she stirs. A safe distance from the hearth fire is a table on which is placed two blue-glazed bowls. Two open weave kerchiefs are folded neatly to the side along with two small heavy towels. To the side is a pitcher containing the rennet from a lamb slaughtered the day before.

    MOIRA

    Tell me a story, Mother!

    KEITA

    (carefully stirs the milk)

    What story would you have me tell, Moira?

    MOIRA

    (handing Keita the pitcher containing the rennet)

    Tell me about our people.

    KEITA

    (pouring the rennet into the simmering pot and stirring)
