CHAPTER ONE
FOG BELLOWED FROM ZACH HOWARD'S
mouth with each exhalation, while a frigid breeze chilled his sweat-slickened temple and brow. The sound of his feet hitting tarmac exploded in the otherwise silent morning air as he ran along the side of the two-lane highway. Snow on either side of the road glowed silver beneath the stars. Only a couple of vehicles had slashed their beams past him as they raced by. Traffic would increase once the sun crested the horizon and weak, winter light filtered through the pines. Two more miles after he hit the bend and he'd turn back around to home.
He loved this time of day, the clear Colorado air in his lungs, the feel of his body being pushed, of being alive, healthy and one with his surroundings. Soon enough he'd be buried at work. Tourist season was in full swing, and his store, Mountain Sporting Goods, always seemed the busiest right before the holiday season. Granted, Candid wasn't considered a skiing resort, but they managed to get enough spillover from Telluride to keep small businesses in town busy and profitable.
Something hit his shoe and clung to his ankle with cold tentacles. He shook his foot but couldn't dislodge it from his leg. He slowed to a stop and looked down. Frowning, he pried smooth plastic sunglasses from around his ankle. He started to toss them into the snow drift to his right but paused. An odd glow animated from the lenses.
How strange. He ran his fingers across the ear rests and along the actual glass-like lenses. He'd mistakenly thought they were plastic because of their light weight, but then he realized they consisted of some type of material he didn't recognize. His store stocked a large selection of sunglasses, but nothing as pricey as these.
Curious about the glow, he slipped them on and looked through the lenses, but he couldn't see beyond to the trees or road around him. Sudden blinding light flashed across his vision.
A kaleidoscope of color swirled across the sunglass lenses. An image of Holly appeared. He sucked in a breath. Shit. The vision shimmered, then solidified until it felt stronger than a dream, stronger than any memory he'd ever had of her. She looked as beautiful as he remembered. Glorious chestnut hair in waves past her shoulders, blinding silver-blue eyes, creamy skin that was incredible to the touch.
She stood in his kitchen and the house they would have lived in together if they'd married. Morning light from the window magnified the tears glistening in her eyes. He reached over and caught her wrist, but she yanked away from his grasp. The feel of her skin felt too real. The scent of her hair clung in the air around him.
A wild moment of understanding hit Zach. His heart crashed inside his ribs. This wasn’t a memory. The images were too vivid, too colorful.
But strangely it was a moment from his past. And not just a moment, but the moment when his life had crashed and burned.
I can't do this anymore,
Holly whispered. A tear escaped past her lashes to land on one cheek.
Do what?
he asked, knowing how stupid the question was. Body rigid, she stood only feet away, but a chasm was slowly widening between them, and he didn't know how to shorten it.
She waved a hand in a random direction. Us. You. Me.
His chest tightened. He wanted her to take back those words, to scrub them from the air as if they'd never been uttered. I can change.
I've been waiting for you to change for a year now.
Shame crept up his neck and into his face. I just need a little more time.
I don't have any more time to give, Zach.
She brushed at her cheek with the back
