    Acknowledgments

Thanks to the people who critiqued this story and helped me make it the best it can be: David Surrett, Damien Angelica Walters, Mei-Lu McGonigle, Bonnie R. Paulson, Shelley Martin, and Trish Nelson.

Thank you to Kent Butler for taking a photograph of the creepy church for the cover.

Thanks to the town of Spirit Lake for inspiring this story.

Thanks to Alex Johnson for showing me that there’s a place for a short heavy metal horror tale.

Thanks to Catt Dahman, Jim Goforth, and the folks at JEA Press for all my new friendships in the world of horror.

And most of all, thanks to my readers. I would be nothing without you.

It’s perfect, Xochitl* breathed. (*prounced So-She)

Yeah, Beau muttered, shading his hazel eyes to peer at the ancient structure. Perfectly awful.

The abandoned church rose up like a leviathan in the overgrown lawn. A barely legible For Sale or Lease sign, obscured by a scraggly lilac bush, leaned haphazardly near the overgrown walkway. Her friends nodded in solemn accord.

I don’t know, Xoch’ Sylvis said. What if people complain about the noise? She waved a doubtful hand towards the houses lining the street.

They can’t do more than complain, Aurora countered. The noise ordinance doesn’t go into effect until ten. As long as we’re outta here by then, we’re cool. Right, Dad? Her silver nose ring gleamed in the sunlight as she turned toward her father.

Daniel Lee curled his brown fist under his chin. I’m a psychiatrist, not a lawyer, but as far as I understand from the last time you kids made a racket, that’s correct. Are you four positive you’ll be able to cover the rent… He paused and surveyed them with a stern, but affectionate gaze. "And be able to afford the gas to drive here and back three times a week?"

Yes! they chorused. Xochitl jumped up and down, her black and purple hair bouncing around her like a strange cloud.

Dr. Lee chuckled at the excited group. He had no idea why people thought Goth kids were depressed. These were the most cheerful adolescents he’d known. You better be sure, he admonished, "And not only because my name’s on the lease. I’ll be really let down if you give up on this. I don’t want to see your talent wasted. Have you come up with a name for your band yet?"

Before they could reply, a dirty pickup pulled up behind Dr. Lee’s Volvo. A woman with a sour expression on her leathery face got out and approached them, slapping a file folder against her leg. A set of keys on a chewed-up fob jangled from her fingers.

That’d be the landlady, Daniel said. Why don’t you check the place out while we do the paperwork? She said she left it unlocked for the electrician.

    Sweet!
