Chapter I
Peace
motifWhat do you want?
I want peace.
Meditate on the setting sun.
Meditate on the top of a mountain.
Meditate on self-giving.
Meditate on the non-existence
Of expectation.
The Seed of Peace
In the outer life you cannot have peace unless and until you have first established peace in your inner life. Early in the morning, if you treasure a few divine thoughts before leaving your home, then these thoughts will enter into your outer life as energizing, fulfilling realities.
It is in the inner world that everything starts. The inner world is where we sow the seed. If we sow the seed of peace and love, naturally it will produce a tree of peace and love when it germinates. The peace we bring to the fore from the inner world through our prayer and meditation is very strong, very powerful, and it lasts. When we have that peace in our inner life, our outer life is bound to be transformed. It is only a matter of time.
A moment’s truth
Can and shall make the world beautiful.
A moment’s peace
Can and shall save the world.
A moment’s love
Can and shall make the world perfect.
Beyond the Mind
Peace is our greatest and highest blessing. We think that we can get everything with prosperity; but if we are wanting in peace, then we are the worst possible beggar. We say peace of mind,
but actually we do not have peace in the mind. By staying in the mind, we can never have even a glimpse of peace. When we want peace, we have to go beyond the realm of the mind.
How can we go beyond the mind? It is through our constant aspiration. That aspiration will enable us to collect the mind like a bundle and throw it into the sea of the heart. Then we will see that our whole existence will be inundated with inner peace.
It is only through
Inner peace
That we can have true
Outer freedom.
motifFirst Things First
We can achieve peace in our outer life provided we do the first thing first. Early in the morning, before we enter into the hustle and bustle of life, if we meditate for ten or fifteen minutes, then peace will enter into us. If we bring forward our divine qualities of aspiration, dedication, love, devotion and surrender to the Will of God, they are bound to bring down peace from above.
These qualities are like divine friends, eternal friends within us; they are more than eager to be of service. If we invoke them early in the morning before we leave our house, then we will go outside with peace. But if we do not feel the conscious need for peace and do not invoke it, why should peace come to us? Unless and until we invoke it, peace will remain in its own world.
How can we have peace,
Even an iota of peace, in our outer life,
Amid the hustle and bustle
Of our multifarious activities?
Easy: we have to choose the inner voice.
motifThe Adamantine Power of Peace
The power of peace is similar to the power of money. If we put money in our pocket early in the morning, we can buy things all day. Similarly, if we meditate early in the morning for peace, and peace descends, then when we enter into the mad, insane world, we are surcharged and inundated with peace, which we can utilize all day.
Peace itself is adamantine power. If we are powerful and strong, then the restlessness of the world cannot torture us.
But if we are weak and lack inner peace, naturally we will be overwhelmed by the restlessness and undivine qualities of the world.
That peace is true peace
Which is not affected
By the roaring of the world,
Outer or inner.
motifExercise
Boundless Sky, Infinite Sea
Meditation is like going to the bottom of the sea, where everything is calm and tranquil. On the surface there may be a multitude of waves, but the sea is not affected below. In its deepest depths, the sea is all silence. When we start meditating, first we try to reach our own inner existence, our true existence – that is to say, the bottom of the sea. Then, when the waves come from the outside world, we are not affected. Fear, doubt, worry and all the earthly turmoils will just wash away, because inside us is solid peace.
Thoughts cannot touch us, because our mind is all peace, all silence, all oneness. Like fish in the sea, they jump and swim but leave no mark. Like birds flying in the sky, they leave no trace behind them. So when we are in our highest meditation, we feel that we are the sea, and the animals in the sea cannot affect us. We feel that we are the sky, and all the birds flying past cannot affect us. Our mind is the sky and our heart is the infinite sea. This is meditation.
Unhorizoned is our inner peace.
Like the boundless sky,
It encompasses all.
Exercise
The Calm Mind
When we meditate, what we actually do is enter into a vacant, calm, still, silent mind. We go deep within and approach our true existence, which is our soul. When we live in the soul, we feel that we are actually meditating spontaneously. At that time, we see that our inner existence is surcharged with peace and tranquility.
Tension is in the mind, nowhere else. Tension goes away to a great extent if you can breathe in and out very slowly. If you can imagine that you are taking one full minute to breathe in and another full minute to breathe out, even though in reality it may not be true that you are taking that long, then your tension is bound to be released.
Peace that comes
From the inner awakening
Is the peace everlasting.
motifDo Not Blame the World
We own peace only after we have totally stopped finding fault with others. We have to feel the whole world as our very own. When we observe others’ mistakes, we enter into their imperfections. This does not help us in the least. Strangely enough, the deeper we plunge, the clearer it becomes to us that the imperfections of others are our own imperfections, but in different bodies and minds. Whereas if we think of God, His Compassion and His Divinity enlarge our inner vision of truth. We must come in the fullness of our spiritual realization to accept humanity as one family.
Do not
Blame the world.
Find
A solution.
motifPractical Solutions
How to find inner peace? On the practical level, do not expect anything from others on the physical plane. Just give and give and give, like a mother who gives everything to her child, thinking that the child is not in a position to give her anything in return. Do not expect anything from the world; only love the world and offer your capacity, your inner wealth, your joy. Everything that you have, give to the world unconditionally. If we expect anything from the world, then we will feel miserable because the world does not understand us, the world does not care for us. So if we can do anything unconditionally, then we will have peace of mind. This is one way.
The other way is to meditate on the heart, where there is constant joy, constant love. At that time we will not cry for appreciation from others. We will all the time depend on our inner Source, where there is infinite joy, infinite love, infinite peace. The best thing is to meditate on the heart. This is the second way, which is most effective.
What do I see in my meditation?
In my meditation I see
A larger-than-the-largest
Ocean of peace
And blue-vast sky
Inside my tinier-than-the-tiniest
Heart.
Use a Higher Weapon
When you have to defend yourself or protect yourself, try to use a higher weapon. If people say something and you retaliate on the same level, there will be no end to it. Again, if
