    Today he is holed up in a room over a darkened street with a sniper rifle prepared to die if necessary so the pain of war is ended.

      Istole a quick look over the dusty windowsill to survey the street three stories below the apartment. Through the dirt-smudged window, I saw that the street was devoid of my neighbors or the enemy. My breathing came in sharp intakes as adrenaline raced through my lean frame, causing the earthy aroma of the sand in the bags I’d piled up along the walls to invade my nostrils .
