    Prologue

Nate Porter looked down at the muddy ground and tried hard not to fall apart. The smell of smoke and burning wood filled the air. Raindrops fell on his cheeks and he could hear the thunder rolling. Normally, he would have picked himself up and try to find shelter from the falling rain but he didn’t care. At this point, he was willing to have lighting strike him down. He had nothing to look forward to.

What am I going to do? Everything is gone. He looked at the remains of his house. Sure, he had money in the bank and there would some things under the floorboards that would be safe. Once the smoke cleared, he would dig them out and see how much damage had been done. The artwork and furniture could be replaced. He could always buy new clothes, accessories, and material things that he needed. However, the fire had taken away more than just some mere possessions. He remembered running through the burning house and trying to find his wife. He screamed her name, but no one answered.

I’m sorry, Rebecca. I couldn’t get to you in time.

He had no one to turn to at this hour. He dug his fingers into the dirt and tried to cling to something. Help had been on the way but what good would that do? No one was going to save him. They had failed to save Rebecca and there was no point in saving him. They would never be able to understand what he was feeling. The one thing he wanted now was vengeance. He had no time to grieve because he wanted to kill someone. He wanted to rip someone’s head off and tear them from limb to limb. He could still hear what everyone had told him when they pulled Rebecca out of the house.

I’m sorry. Smoke inhalation works very quickly and it doesn’t seem like she was able to get close to the door. I’m afraid that your unborn child has passed away as well.

Their unborn child passed away. He hated that everyone referred to their daughter as that. They already knew what the baby was going to be. They had picked out the things for her room and were deciding on what to name her. Rebecca liked the name Michelle while he was torn between Serena, Catherine, and Alana. They never were able to make a decision and now all the baby’s things had gone up in flames. He could still picture how it looked like when they had decorated it. Everything was painted in a pale yellow and the crib was white with sunflowers carved on the side. They also had matching furniture and some of the clothes picked out. Now none of this mattered. He had no wife and no daughter. People kept giving him condolences, but they wouldn’t heal him.

His family had begged him to leave the area, but he couldn’t do that. He wanted to be here, which had been his home and Rebecca’s last place to live. They had been thinking about moving and leaving this house with his oldest sister. They wanted their daughter to grow up somewhere new and experience different things. Those plans had been dashed tonight and for the rest of his life. Despite how badly he wanted to run from it, he couldn’t. He just wanted to curl up and die right there.

Am I in Hell? He wondered, looking down at the ground. It had been hours since everything went up in flames. Perhaps a day or two had passed. He wasn’t keeping track of time. His home had been burnt down and he lost everything. However, that didn’t hurt as bad as losing Rebecca. He was willing to do anything to feel her body against his again. He wanted to taste her lips, run his fingers through her dark hair, gaze into those brown eyes, and trace his hand down her curves. He could still smell her on his clothes. She always wore that perfume that had the fruity scent to it. He couldn’t remember what it was called, but he loved it. He loved her.

Despite the money and admiration, life was not good to Nate Porter. When he was only ten, his parents had died in when one of their factories caught fire. People had tried to get them out, but the building collapsed and trapped them. No one survived that accident. He was an orphan who only had his sisters for a family and the money to help him get through. He didn’t know how he had managed to pull himself back up. Once he left college and went into business, people noticed him. He didn’t smile as much, but they found him interesting. Women wanted to be with him and men wanted to be him. They wanted to live his life of luxury and mystery. He didn’t show much on the outside because he didn’t want them to see his pain. Most people didn’t know how much he still hurt from the loss of his parents. He probably needed to get over it, but no one could understand that.

However, Rebecca did understand him. When she entered his life, he began to feel something again. She didn’t care that he was wealthy or healing from his losses. She didn’t try to force him to tell him the whole story and let him open up when he was ready. It didn’t take long before he fell in love and they got married. They were already planning to start their family. Things were starting to be perfect again. He had her, she had him, and they had the whole world to explore. For the first time in ages, he had something to live for. Rebecca was the one person who knew how to make him smile again. She knew what was going to make him happy.

As luck would have it, she had to be taken from him too. This time, it hurt worse because he felt like he had plummeted from a higher ground. He didn’t know how the fire started, but he rushed back home as soon as he could. He was never able to find her in the smoke and flames. Eventually, he was forced out and the firefighters made their way in. In the end, they did find her but she was already dead. They told him that smoke inhalation worked fast and not to blame himself. That had been only a few days ago, but he couldn’t leave his burnt down house. Almost everything had been reduced to ashes. He had some things hidden under floor boards that survived such as photo albums, some cash and jewelry, and a few bottles of wine. The bank would have money, of course, so he could rebuild in no time. Getting another house wasn’t the problem. It was the emotional issues that money couldn’t heal.

    There’s nothing here. Nothing.

Even though Nate thought it he was alone, he was being watched. She had him in her sights ever since the fire went out. As soon as the last flame died out, she found herself here. The house was completely destroyed, but the owner was alive. If he didn’t look so depressed, he would be handsome. His shoulders were nicely sculpted, his face was chiseled and sharp, and a trickle of blood fell from his thick lips. She longed to touch him and feel his warmth against her cold skin. It was sad to see him this way, but it also made him irresistible.

He had bruises and cuts all over him, but the worst pain was in his heart. He had been hurting for a long time. He carried a hatred inside that would burn him if he didn't learn to control it. She felt a little pity towards him. He might have been powerful once, but now he was pathetic. Something about him pulled her closer. Most people were weak and sad but not him. She was intrigued by him and she could tell he was intrigued by her. He might have been frightened, but he was good at hiding it.

I can’t stay here forever. Nate told himself, trying to stand up. He had far too many cuts on his body and some of them were still bleeding. He gingerly touched the cut on his knee and winced. Normally, he would have went to the hospital but he didn’t feel like it. All he wanted to do was sit by the remains of his home and grieve.

Something was walking towards him. Her steps were loud despite the fact that she was on soft, wet grass. It felt like someone was stomping down on the ground. He sat up and looked around. Who’s there?!

Don’t worry. I’m not here to hurt you. A woman’s voice said. He could hear it coming from behind the oak tree where he had put his and Rebecca’s initials. It was the cheesiest gesture he ever came up with, but she loved it. He felt relieved to see that the tree hadn’t caught fire as well. At least he still had that as a reminder.

What do you want? He asked, not bothering to look at her. He wasn’t in the mood to entertain nosy neighbors or strangers. I’m not in the mood to talk. You’re better off coming here tomorrow.

You look like you need help, she began, ignoring his request. You've been wronged by someone and you want revenge. Am I right?

He didn't say anything, but he finally looked up. His eyes were blood red and curious. This alone should have been a warning sign, but he couldn’t run away. He was stuck in the mud and staring at this woman. The spark that had been in them had been snuffed out. She looked hungry but not because she wanted to eat him. If anything, she looked hungry for something else. He was on guard even though he could not move. This woman, whoever or whatever she was, had him in her sights. She wanted something.

She went on. I think I could help you. You haven't been loved in a long time and I could love you.

I don't want love, he muttered. I just want to make them pay...

You will. Let me explain what I'm trying to say. I’m not here to give you love. I want it.

He could not believe what he was hearing. You want love from me? That’s a strange request.

It sounds strange to you, but it’s a foreign concept to me, she explained. I have never known what love is like. As a demon, you don't get to feel it. You don’t know what it’s like to be consumed by love. I’ve always wanted to know what it was like to hold a person. To kiss them. To fuck them. The way she said the last part made him raise his brows. She seemed to be the most interested in fucking based how she said it. I know what you’re thinking. You’re having doubts about me.

Actually, I don’t know if I can help you. I’m not that kind of man. He turned away from her. I’ve lost everything I ever loved.

I know. I’m not asking you to fuck me right now. I’m trying to make a deal with you. You want to get back whoever did this right? She pointed to his burned down house. Well, that will be easy if I’m at your side. Getting money will be no problem either if you have a job. I will help you get your revenge. In turn, you need to show me what love is. Show me all the ways that you can love someone. Make me feel loved.

He blinked. You want me to show you love? Why would you choose me? There have got to be other men out there who are better off than I am. They might even be more willing.

There’s something about you, she said. You’re strong enough to love whether you believe it or not. Do you think you can show me? I can give you anything you want along with your revenge. You just say the word and I will hand it over to you in any condition.

He didn’t know what to think about this. On one hand, it would be good to have a partner. On the other, she was asking for too much. He didn’t know love anymore. He didn’t know what it was like to be held, kissed, or fucked. It had only been a few months, but he had forgotten all about it. He could still feel his wife right next to him, her hands going down his back and her teeth biting his lips. She knew how to be firm and gentle at the same time. Did this demon even know how to go through things gently? It felt like the worst contract he had heard of.

    Make me feel love.

He looked up at her. What will happen once you do know what love is?

Ah, the demon said. I think I can come up with payment later. Right now, we both have bigger things to deal with. I just want an answer. Show me love and I’ll give you anything you want. She held out her hand. If you agree to these terms, then squeeze my hand. Take it and don’t let go.

He didn’t understand what she meant by the last line, but he took her hand. He didn’t know why he wanted to agree to this but he had to. If it meant avenging Rebecca and getting his life back together, so be it. He squeezed her hand and could feel her fingers intertwining with his. Slowly, he could see her face and body. Before he knew it, the shadowed figure had turned into a woman. Her skin was brown like caramel and her black hair went down to her waist. Her eyes were still blood red, but he couldn’t tell if that was real or if he had imagined this. Demons didn’t exist despite what she claimed. She didn’t look frightening, but he could tell this was just a disguise. She had changed just so he would relax.

    Then it’s settled, she said.

It’s settled, he murmured, tasting more blood in his mouth. It felt like it was flowing out rather than trickling down. However, he wasn’t bleeding very much. The only blood he had was the dried blood on face and shirt.
