    Red Gambly smelled more like dust than sweat but he was always covered in both. The By Gone Daze Salvage Yard wasn’t his only source of income. He was also a bouncer at the Lady of the Lake Dance Club located on Alabama’s most celebrated Lake Eufaula. There was never any trouble when the six foot six tall and nearly four hundred pound Red was at the door. He only worked there two long nights, Fridays and Saturdays when it was a strip club, and not during the week when it was just a bar for students from the local college and whatever high school kids could sneak in. He made enough money to pay all his bills and keep the taxes on his land up to date and the By Gone Daze Salvage Yard open.

    The July heat wave was in its sixth day when the stranger first appeared at the Yard. Red was sitting in the nineteen forties barber chair his Papa, also known as Red, had reupholstered with car seat material from a Dodge Lancer. The slick green leatherette covered springs weren’t tested to bear the weight of the kind giant but achieved a high enough passing grade that Car and Driver Magazine would have given them an award for their performance.

    Who ‘Dat? Red asked his fat beagle while squinting his eyes against the noon day sun.

    Fat lifted his head above his eighty-eight pound beagle body and squinted like his Master as he lay on the overstuffed dog bed next to the chair. The fabric pattern was large fall colored leaves and from a distance one may think the dog was sleeping on a just raked pile.

    The man in question appeared blurred and moving in the illusion of the heat as it rose from the ground carrying any moisture it could find with it. Red wiped his head with his checker board bandana and tried to focus leaving it above his eyes. He could tell the man was wearing a suit and hat as he stood waiting in the center of the large and ornate open gates of the yard. They were made of thick wrought
