First meeting with Sally Virtue
"Hi! My name is Sally Virtue; I know, stupid name. I get a lot of flak at school over that, but that’s the name I’m stuck with. I don’t think my mom should have married my dad; she could have picked someone with a better name.
Anyway, we had this stupid kid in my class at school; his name was Trevor. He had fourteen brothers and sisters; FOURTEEN!! Well, that told us what his mom and dad were doing most of the time. No wonder his dad didn’t have a job.
He only came to school for two weeks and then we didn’t see him again. Weird!
They lived in a house at the edge of town; not a big town mind you; only a population of about nine hundred. Lots of kids in school; but I guess with no movie theater, bowling alley or any other kind of entertainment we all knew what the parents got up to. The T.V. station is hopeless; mostly religious stuff and heaps of B movies in black and white.
I guess that’s what the B stands for; B O R I N G!
Oh, I was telling you about Trevor; Sorry, I got sidetracked.
Well, the word around town was that Trevor’s dad had gone prospecting in the woods. Prospecting for what? I thought. I don’t know what it is, but I always think of gold when I hear of someone prospecting. There’s never been any gold around here otherwise someone would have cottoned on to it before now.
Well, he apparently decided to take the whole family with him and set up some sort of camp in the woods. Probably wanted child labor for all that prospecting; I suppose there would be a lot of digging.
About three weeks ago one of Trevor’s brothers came staggering out of the woods; snotty little kid I never liked. He started telling everyone about weird noises they heard through the night. Well, I’ll tell you now; if I’d heard weird noises in the middle of the night, I would have high-tailed it out of there the next morning. But no, this stupid family stayed. Trevor’s dad made all sorts of excuses like; ‘it’s probably this or it’s probably that’, total moron!
Well, what’s his name; I can never remember that snotty kids name…..oh yes, Wilfred. Stupid name. Wilfred wanted everyone to go to the woods and rescue his family. Rescue them from what?
He said last night when everyone went to bed he heard screams close by; he stuck his head under the blanket; he thinks it was his mom and dad. He thinks!! I’m sure he doesn’t think at all.
He reckoned the next morning he was the only one left in camp. Even his brothers and sisters had disappeared. Right, I thought. They probably moved on and left him there…..snotty kid.
Well, our local sheriff; just looks like a fat cop to me, sitting in his police car eating donuts. Well, he started to gather a search party. My dad didn’t volunteer, he’s not the woodsy type and my mom was glad he wasn’t going. She’s pretty smart my mom.
They left on a Saturday morning, all those pickups driving into the woods; rifles racked on the back. I’m sure it was an excuse to go hunting and
