- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Books like this -- information about the colonial era, from colonial travelers and administrators -- are hard indeed to come by, but well worth pursuing when they can be found. Unexpected information abounds -- real details on indigenous cultures, frequently neither biased nor bowlderized; depictions of the sheer ambition that the colonial era displayed (either the Germans trained zebras to pull carts, or Peter MacQueen had a steam-powered copy of Photoshop), that sort of thing. What on Earth happened to this world -- why did Europe get through the part where it plundered the rest of the world, then drop the ball on the part where it modernized it?Don't answer that, but there's good cause to blame the Communists.Anyhow, I doubt that anyone is likely to find a copy of this book; but anyone who does will probably already know to read it.
