WIRING A DOLL’S HOUSE FOR ELECTRICITY

ELECTRICITY adds greatly to the charm of the modern doll’s house. It can be used to provide illumination, ring a bell, and to represent cosy fires in open grates as well as miniature electric heaters.

    Power Supply

Electricity supplied to the doll’s house must be so arranged that it will be safe for use by children—free from risk of shocks or other preventable accidents.

Practical sources of power are primary batteries, dry cells, accumulators and low-voltage supplies from A.C. mains.

Primary batteries are objectionable because of the free acid and renewal trouble; dry batteries do not enjoy a long life and are expensive. Accumulators afford a longer life and can be recharged, but there is a definite risk of damage should the acid be spilled, unless the jelly acid type is used.

Undoubtedly the best source of power when an A.C. electricity supply is available, is to use a small transformer such as the Ferranti Bellringer Transformer. These are perfectly safe, and work directly off the house supply.

    Mains Transformer

Those who are not familiar with A.C. electric practice may care to know that a transformer is a device that changes the high voltage of the supply mains to a low voltage; moreover, when properly designed and made, it is so arranged that no matter what happens, not more than a certain amount of electricity can get past the transformer. In the case of the Bellringer, the output is limited to what is known as 3 volt-amperes. This is sufficient to light eight or ten
