About this ebook
They are all decorated with John Hassall’s bold and charming black-and-white line drawing, as well as several colour plates. Hassall (1868 – 1948), was an English illustrator, best known for his advertisements and poster designs. Making use of flat colours, generally enclosed by thick black lines, his children’s books took inspiration from his poster work – and are now incredibly sought after collectors items. Appearing alongside the text, John Hassall’s, illustrations further refine and elucidate the care-free simplicity of these three classic fairy tales.
Pook Press celebrates the great ‘Golden Age of Illustration‘ in children’s literature – a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration. We publish rare and vintage Golden Age illustrated books, in high-quality colour editions, so that the masterful artwork and story-telling can continue to delight both young and old.

Beauty and the Beast
THERE lived long, long ago a rich merchant who had three daughters. His youngest daughter was beautiful and good. She was called Beauty. His two elder daughters were ill-tempered, and they hated Beauty because she was prettier than they.
One day the merchant lost his fortune, so he took his daughters to live in a cottage.
The elder daughters grumbled, but Beauty set to work cheerfully to make the humble home comfortable for her father.
After a time, the merchant heard that a ship was bringing home some of his lost goods.
The elder daughters were wild with joy.
