About this ebook

The Morehead City Waterfront in Eastern North Carolina rests on Bogue Sound and the Intracoastal Waterway, with an inlet to the Atlantic Ocean between Shackleford Banks and Fort Macon State Park on North Carolina's Outer Banks. Former North Carolina governor John Motley Morehead planned for the city to be a flourishing commercial port and fishing location-his dream has become a reality. The seaside town thrives on the sound and Intracoastal Waterway, offering visitors and locals a charming, dream-like place to savor a slower pace of life with the richness of the sea air. Visitors flock to the area to enjoy deep-sea fishing in the Gulf Stream, scuba diving to the many wreck sites just off the coast, dining at restaurants that offer famous shore dinners, shopping the many gift stores and art galleries on the waterfront, or just relaxing while watching the boats sail up and down the sound. Morehead City on the Waterfront explores those nostalgic memories of days gone by and the town's unique location on the water.

I really enjoyed looking through this book with photographs and narrative, another one from the Images of American series. Since I grew up taking family vacations to the Morehead City area, I recognized the locations of many of the photographs, and even some of the surnames mentioned, like Fulcher. Quite of few of the pictures were taken in the 1950s, so I bet my parents would enjoy this book. There are even some pictures of Morehead during and after Hurricanes Carol and Ione, which I've heard my mom mention.

THE WATERFRONT

This 1958 view of the cut on a summer afternoon shows boats returning from a day of fishing from the inlet to the Gulf Stream. The trawler Edith M. is docked at the back of Ottis’s Fish House. It will leave late in the afternoon to spend a night of trawling for shrimp and return early in the morning to unload its catch.

This fishing party shows off a full rack of fish caught on the Dolphin I in 1974.

Men at Ottis’s Fish House wash off fish before packing them in ice and wooden boxes to be shipped up and down the East Coast in 1955.

John Wagner, a local fisherman, is seen cleaning a fish in the late 1950s. He was typical of the old salts along the waterfront.

Little Mary and Miss Alicia are seen here at the dock c. 1950. To the right the Sea Raven is coming
