About this ebook
The engaging history of Buchanan County is explored in-depth in this book.
Buchanan County, like many small counties, has gone through boom and bust in its history. From floods and fires to economic prosperity, Buchanan went from being one of the wealthiest counties to one of the poorest in the state of Virginia. Unlike many small counties, Buchanan is reinventing itself. The original county is no more and is currently being rebuilt.
Brenda S. Baldwin
Authors Brenda S. Baldwin and Victoria L. Osborne have photographed and written extensively about the county and its changes.

INTRODUCTION
As of the 2006 census, Buchanan County, Virginia, was ranked as the poorest county in the commonwealth of Virginia and one of the poorest counties in the United States. Poverty and hard times are nothing new to this county, and the people of this county have always bounced back to survive and live to play another day.
Currently, the county is in the process of reinventing itself. The old downtown has been torn down and moved. New buildings have been built, and businesses are starting to come into the area. The old industries of mining and logging are still present but are not the economic force they once were. The new industry is academics. The Appalachian School of Law and the Appalachian Pharmacy School are breathing new life into an area that was known for making coal miners millionaires three decades ago.
The history of Buchanan County starts in 1858, when it was created by Act 156 of the Virginia General Assembly. The county was named for James Buchanan, the 15th president of the United States. The county seat was named for Felix Grundy. Grundy was a congressman, U.S. senator, judge, and the attorney general in Pres. Martin Van Buren’s cabinet in 1838.
The county entered the Civil War in 1861. Since few slaves lived in the area, few gave the war much thought. That changed in December 1864, when Gen. Stephen Burbridge advanced into the Cumberland Gap. The Union army advanced into Southwest Virginia, destroying towns and homes. The county survived the war and continued to
