    Prologue

White Rose A New Era is a fast moving story through the tribulation, ending with the glorious appearing. Although this is a fictional story it is based on one factual event—the soon return of Jesus Christ.

‘And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals. And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof? And no man in heaven, nor in earth, neither under the earth, was able to open the book, neither to look thereon. And I wept much, because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book, neither to look thereon. And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.’ Revelation Five.

    CHAPTER One

Joel Goldstein sauntered down the street, headed for Coney Joe's and a meeting with his best friend Craig. Today was the first day of spring break, and he was anticipating some much needed R&R. He savored the familiar smells and sights of New York City, so different from Israel where had been born and raised until his mother died. Although he could have had his pick of colleges, the Academy of Aviation in New York City was his choice. Since he was a little boy, he had always dreamed of being a pilot. Now with a determined spirit, he was well on his way to fulfilling that dream.

Joel crossed the street when he noticed that Craig was already seated at one of the outside tables. Hey Joel, what's up?

Nothing much. I was just planning on kicking back and relaxing.

You’ve got to be kidding. Relax in New York City?

Joel grinned. Craig was a likeable guy who loved to party. Find the action and you'd find Craig – for he was always the life of the party. So you got any plans for the day?

Craig shrugged his shoulders. Let's just see what happens.

As Craig sipped his coffee, his eyes moved across the street and fell on a lovely young lady. She was wearing tight blue jeans and a loose fitting sweater. Her figure was slender but with just the right curves at her hips. Joel was just about to say, Let's get out of here, when he glanced up to see what Craig was looking at. Joel just grinned.

Check out those jeans, Craig said, staring at her as she walked away. I'll be right back.

Joel watched him walk away. He’d had always been amused at Craig’s overzealous quest for the ladies.

Craig returned to the table just as Joel gulped down the last of his latte. So, how'd it go?

It has to be my lucky day. She's on spring break from Princeton and as luck would have it she invited us to a party.

Have you thought about how you're planning on getting there? You do know Princeton is in New Jersey? Besides, aren't you getting tired of partying?

Yeah, right! You just think about all those Princeton girls, not to mention that the beer is on the house and leave all the details to me. Craig glanced at her, still standing across the street, and grinned. I think she's in need of an experienced guide. I'll call you tonight.

That night Joel was in deep thought as he tried to figure out how to beat his old man in a game of chess. He found it relaxing, challenging, and sometimes frustrating. He had beaten his dad only twice before. As he stared at the board, he was startled by the sound of the phone. Joel hurried to the kitchen. Hello.

Hey, Joel sorry about ditching you, but she was hot.

That's okay. I would have done the same.

Well, I talked my old man into giving me his car. Just be at Coney Joe's around three tomorrow afternoon.

I'm not sure I can make it. I promised the old man that I'd work tomorrow.

Oh, still doing the courier thing?

Yeah, dad’s business is doing well – he hired another part timer last week. Even if I finish in time, I'm not sure I'll be in the mood for a party. I'll tell you what, if I'm not there by three, just leave without me.

Joel, you’ve got to be kidding. Just dream about all those Princeton girls, and I'll see you there.

When the alarm went off, Joel hadn't moved for hours, he was dead to the world. It was early morning, and the sun was just starting to peek through the curtains. Shutting off the alarm, he had just enough time to take a quick shower, before leaving for work. While he was getting dressed, he could hear his dad saying his morning prayers. Although his dad was a devout Orthodox Jew, Joel had never really shared in his enthusiasm.

As Joel was heading down the stairs, he smelled the familiar scent of eggs frying. By this time, his dad would have finished his morning prayers and be making his usual eggs and toast. Every day he ate the same thing. No change, no variation. Same old, same old. His dad believed that breakfast was the most important meal of the day.

Joel paused, tempted to go into the kitchen and say good morning, but he didn't have time to argue about skipping breakfast. Better to just go, he thought.

    Hey Dad, I'm leaving.

    What about breakfast?

    I'm not hungry.

Don't forget you have deliveries to make. His dad's accent was just as thick and as Jewish as the day he'd arrived in New York City.

I haven't forgotten. I'm heading there now. Joel loved working for his dad's courier service. He found riding a ten-speed bike through the busy streets of New York City exhilarating. He smiled as he thought one day people would call this kind of courier service FedEx―New York style. Determined to get to Coney Joe's on time he rode more aggressively that day, taking more and more chances, but he wasn't worried. He could navigate the streets of New York City with his eyes closed. He knew every street, shortcut, and curve in the road. His last stop of the day was at the Broadway Theatre. After delivering his last package, Joel shifted the strap of his back pack to his left shoulder and headed for the doors. Rushing out the exit, he glanced at his watch and smiled, for he had finished with time to spare. Pulling into the garage, he secured his bike and headed for Coney Joe's. After eight or nine blocks of walking, he felt exhausted and was starting to wonder if he really wanted to go when he noticed a deli. Joel decided that maybe all he needed was a cup of coffee and a little rest. As he sat there letting his muscles relax the waitress offered him a shy smile.

    What will it be?

Joel smiled back and said, You must have heard that line from a late night movie, you just left off the Mack. As they talked Joel became enchanted with her. It was like they had known each other all their lives. He was thinking about leaving when Sarah told him that she was glad her shift was finally over. He tried to find the right words to say but felt like a sophomore on his first date. He ended up just blurting out, Which way are you heading?

I'm just planning on doing some window shopping.

    Would you like some company?

Surprised by the offer, Sarah flashed him an awkward smile. Normally she would have made up some excuse, but when she looked into Joel's eyes, something about him caused her to say, I’d like that.

As they walked Sarah told him how her dad once owned a furniture store until he had passed away. Would you like to see it? Sarah asked.

Okay. Joel paused. Sorry to hear about your dad.

As they walked Joel asked, Maybe we could stop for a Coney first?

Sarah looked at Joel. You think working around food all day that I wouldn’t be hungry, but I'd love a chili dog with fries.

If you never tried one of Coney Joe's, you're in for a real treat.

When they arrived at Coney Joe's, Joel saw plenty of regulars but not Craig. Noticing his favorite booth by the front window was open, he seated Sarah and went over to the waitress. Hi Jill, was Craig here?

You just missed him. She's cute. Is she your new girlfriend?

Caught off guard, Joel grinned as he thought about Sarah. We just met, but…

Joel made his way back to the table. Maybe it was for the best that he had missed Craig, he'd rather be with Sarah. As he sat down, Joel couldn't decide what he liked best about Sarah, her long brown hair or the way she wore it in a ponytail or maybe it was her big brown eyes. Then he realized it was the way she looked at him as though she was genuinely interested in what he had to say. Joel could tell from her expressions, demeanor, and eye contact that there was more to Sarah than just a pretty face. Then when he looked into those big brown eyes, he saw the warmth of her soul breaking through, and he knew she was the one for him.

As Sarah was taking a bite of her Coney, it oozed over the bun spilling onto her blouse. Joel smiled, I should have warned you about that. I always keep plenty of napkins handy, just in case.

When he handed her some napkins, Sarah thanked him and said, This might be the excuse I was looking for. Now I can do more than just window shop.

Joel wiped his mouth with a napkin, dropped it onto his empty plate, then sipped his coffee. Now that you tried one of the best Coney's ever, we should get going. That is, if you still want to show me your dad's old store. As they left, he couldn't help grinning as he thought, when do women ever need an excuse to shop?

When they arrived at her dad's old store Sarah glanced in the window. Let's go in. Maybe they still have Sarah's Palace.

    Your palace?

My dad fixed a corner of the store and made it into one of the best hangouts any kid could have. Even after I had outgrown it he still kept it, he found that if kids had a place to play while their parents were shopping he ended up selling more.

Sounds like your dad had it all together.

Yeah, I miss him. There was only one time that I can remember that he ever yelled at me. It was when he took me to his warehouse. I often went with him while he did his inventory and played with the empty boxes. You know, pretend to make my palace.

Joel smiled, I can picture you as a little princess. Now how does that story go? Oh yeah, aren't you supposed to kiss your prince?"

I think you’ve read to may fairytales.

    Ribbit. Ribbit.

Sarah grinned and shook her head. Anyway, getting back to the story. This time I found a box cutter and made some doors and windows. It was quite the little palace. When my dad saw it, he really lost it and began yelling at me. I remember sitting in the corner crying and him picking me up. He said never play with sharp objects. I should have told you, I repack the displays back in their boxes. It helps to protect them from the gorillas that make our deliveries.

If that's the worst your dad ever yelled at you, you should be thankful you didn't have mine.

When Joel walked her home, they exchanged phone numbers, and Joel promised to
