    Chapter 1

Within a small meadow, where the grass is as dark green as emeralds, stood a mare and a tiny foal. Everything appeared serene, beautiful, yet something terrible was about to happen. The mare grazed peacefully but suddenly her ears twitched forward and her head shot up. Sherari had heard a faint rustling of leaves coming from the forest and instinctively knew this was a bad sign. She had come to this isolated meadow to protect the foal that stood beside her playfully nudging at the long grass, her neck too short to reach properly.

In that split second Sherari weighed her options. Belle, was a mere week old, frail, and very vulnerable. They had to run, attempt to escape, though she knew quite well that Belle would not be able to keep up. Belle was too young to fly and her large wings would slow her gallop immensely. Sherari’s body lurched forward, when unexpectedly a thin metal chain flung around her neck, it tightened and began choking her. She was thrown backwards, losing her balance and came down hard. Belle’s entire body was vibrating with nervous energy, she had never been this scared before, and now Sherari lay in front of her struggling to breathe, she was barely able to choke out a single word, Run!

Before Belle had the chance to even turn and flee, that same chain started to choke her.

Galaxy was at her wits end. All of her attempts to save her unicorns had ended in failure. Hextia, an evil troll-like creature, had been causing havoc ever since she had entered Paradow uninvited a month ago. Since then she had captured some of Galaxy’s unicorns, used their powers and robbed still others of their lives. Galaxy had tried in vain but simply couldn’t stop Hextia, not without sacrificing more unicorns. Galaxy’s herd lived in Paradow a magical safe haven for both her and Rex’s herd. Rex was a Pegasus and he too had lost as a result of Hextia. Both parties knew something had to be done, but exactly what, was unclear.

Finally after much thought and deliberation Galaxy had a plan.

Would it work? Would the other unicorns and pegasi agree to it? Galaxy called a meeting, before her stood thirty-odd unicorns and some fifty pegasi. Rex, their king, landed next to her, curious to hear her idea. Rex was heartbroken, just a few days prior his precious foal and her nanny had been captured by Hextia. If Galaxy hadn’t talked sense into his head, he too would have been captured. She assured him, however, to be patient, stressing that if he got captured as well, he would be of no help to his foal.

Galaxy raised her head high, looking at the worried expressions on everyone’s faces.

We can’t continue this way any longer, after much thought there is only one option left for us, I must ask a human for help?

Immediately the silence broke as everyone began arguing amongst themselves.

An old, pure white unicorn stepped up to Galaxy.

Galaxy no, that is a bad idea!

I know father, but there is no other option. I refuse to keep losing my unicorns. I have thought about this very clearly I have even found the perfect girl.

I can’t believe you have entered their world?

Dad, please, not now. Galaxy begged.

She raised her voice to, speak to her herd.

Kate, is the perfect candidate, she is kind, soft hearted and an orphan. I will ask her help.

Everyone disagreed and argued once more. Pluto was so angry he stormed off. He was no longer their king, he had retired and left his ruling to Galaxy his daughter. Thus far she had done a great job in protecting the unicorns by keeping their existence a secret. But now he felt that she had lost her mind. He had told her countless times of the dangers associated with humans, yet when danger strikes she seeks their aid.

Quiet everyone. Rex uttered in a deep baritone voice.

Even though I don’t agree with you Galaxy I do, in fact, trust you one hundred percent and if you feel that this is our way out, myself and my herd are behind you.

Galaxy smiled at him, grateful for his kind words.

    Thank you Rex.

    Chapter 2

She sat in the shade, her back leaning against the ancient building. Slowly she picked up a stick, and used it to draw pictures of horses on the ground, consequently she didn’t even hear the noisy kids shouting around her, completely oblivious she was deep in her own magical world which she had created in her mind, mostly because she had such a big imagination and partly to help her escape her present situation. Softly she sang to herself.

Some Where, out there in a magical place, where a unicorn would show its face not even hiding that big horn if only there could have been a place like this you see, where you and me our fantasy, running in the wind so smooth. Oh on his back what a graceful move he has! Some- where- out there, in a magical place.

Katie was a young girl of ten. She was a beautiful girl with long sleek black hair and large green eyes. Her grandfather had always told her that they resembled those of a cat. Her grandfather, when she closed her eyes she could still see him, it was as if he had gone on vacation, surely he would return. Unfortunately he wouldn’t, he couldn’t. Katie’s grandfather, Sean Hugh, had been a tall lean man. His black hair had turned a shade of black-grey, and his moustache, she would never forget the big fluffy moustache. Her grandfather was a wonderful story teller, Katie enjoyed him immensely. They would stay up after dinner for just a few moments then he would invent a story of far-away places and unicorns.

He had also told her the story of her parents. Sean, having had such a huge imagination, would twist the truth just a little to make the hard fact seem so much softer to Katie. Her parents were zoologists and were always travelling in search of a new species. When Katie was two years old they began their expeditions again, leaving Katie in her grandfather’s care, only sadly they never returned.

"They were in Galapagos researching the Galapagos giant tortoises, when their flight back mysteriously caught fire and crashed, but I know
