1 AREA 51
We had found my dad’s old work truck, a 1999 Ford F-150 in the barn and had driven all night long toward Nevada to Area 51. Cash sat in the driver’s seat, Bella sat next to him and I sat next to the passenger door. I remembered that my mom kept money in a coffee can in the cupboard and we found almost two hundred dollars in it then I remembered that she also kept money in an old purse in her closet, it had another hundred dollars in it then after digging through kitchen drawers and emptying out my old piggy bank we’d found a total of three hundred and sixty dollars. Next we’d went through my dad’s hunting stuff and took a pair of binoculars, some camouflaged hunting clothes, a hand gun, ammo and some face camouflage then lastly came across my mom’s digital camera. We were as ready as we could be.
Cash half turned his head as he drove. We’re almost there but we still don’t have much of a plan.
Maybe we can dig under the fence and crawl under it at night,
I suggested.
Bella tuned her head to me then rolled her eyes. Great plan Becca and maybe they’ll think we’re groundhogs and won’t shoot us dead,
she said sarcastically.
Ease up Bella,
Cash scowled.
Bella quickly whipped her head around to Cash. Shut up Cash. I don’t feel like doing life in a Federal Prison if we get caught.
We won’t get caught,
I said trying to reassure her. I rolled my window down lower and gazed out at the desert. The wind had just picked up and blew a gust of sand across the highway. Look at the signs! We’re getting close to Area 51.
Bella laughed sarcastically. Becca, it’s a warning sign not to trespass not a fucking welcome sign for tourists.
I sat up a bit straighter in my seat in anticipation as we neared Area 51 and gazed at the tall chain link fence topped with barbed wire that surrounded the compound. That’s it! It looks just like it does on TV.
Cash slowed the truck down before we got close to the gates, pulled off the highway then brought the truck to a stop alongside the road. I looked over at him. What are you doing?
Let’s just sit and watch the gates for a while. Maybe we’ll get an idea of how to get in?
I nodded my head in agreement. Ok.
Boring,
Bella said then reached out and turned the radio on. You two do whatever you want. I am going to kick back and sleep.
She slumped down in the seat then laid her head back and closed her eyes. Awe, that’s better.
Not much happened for the next couple of hours except – that - a - camouflaged military - Hummer approached the gates and stopped then a gate guard moved to it, spoke to the driver then let it pass into the compound.
Bella was awake now and fidgeting in her seat. I have to pee,
she finally said.
Now?
Cash asked.
No Cash, next week, yes now,
Bella replied.
I interrupted them. Let’s go back to that gas station we passed. We can use the bathroom and get something to eat then come back out here.
Ok,
Cash said. He started the truck up then turned around on the highway and drove toward the gas station that we’d passed a couple of miles back. Cash pulled the truck into the station, parked then we got out and went inside. Bella and I went to the bathroom first then came back out in the store. We all separated to grab what we wanted. I moved to the chip isle, grabbed a bag of salt and vinegar chips, then a coke from the cooler, then some beef jerky and lastly two Hershey’s Almond bars and met them at the counter. I paid for the stuff. Once back in truck Cash returned to the same spot that we were parked at earlier.
Look at that,
Cash said staring at a line of military vehicles that had formed at gate.
I gazed at the military jeeps, Hummer’s and trucks that had formed the line. I wonder what’s going on.
Bella laughed. We’ll never know.
Cash tapped the clock on the dashboard of the truck. Remember the time, it’s three o’clock.
Why?
Bella asked.
I was also curious. Yes why?
Cash cleared his throat. Because, these vehicles might come out here every day to make deliveries or something.
I turned my head to Cash as I bit off another piece of my beef jerky stick. What does that matter?
I might have an idea.
*******
Later that night we’d debated getting a motel room but after a trip to the Walmart and stocking up on some food, we bought an air mattress and a couple of cheap sleeping bags and decided to sleep in the back of the truck to conserve our money. We woke late the next morning, packed up our stuff then left. It was after two in the afternoon when we pulled into the gas station to use the bathroom and get some snacks for the day before going back out to sit and watch the gates. As Cash parked the truck two big camouflaged military trucks pulled up behind us, passed by us then parked on the left side of the gas station.
They’re back again,
Cash said.
We sat in the truck and watched two soldiers get out of their respective trucks then walk inside
