Michelle started each day by feeling her forehead hopefully. Perhaps some overnight malaise would prevent her from going to school. If it was normal, or cool to the touch, she resorted to Plan B — making it warm. Her parents were becoming more difficult to fool. All Michelle used to have to say was cramps. Dad would be immediately hands-off and Mom would smooth her hair and prepare a hot water bottle, telling her that of course she didn’t have to go.

Michelle supposed it was her own fault for trying the ruse more than once a month.

She went to the bathroom and started up the shower. Turning the water as high as it would go, she plopped on the toilet and waited. The steam made her dizzy and weak. After a few moments, she checked her forehead again. It was a mixture of warm and clammy. The water condensation made her a little sweaty. Perfect.

Michelle tried her best moan and smiled to herself. This was going to totally work.

She opened the bathroom door and stumbled out of it.

    Mom? she called. Mom?

    In the kitchen, sweetheart.

All the way in the kitchen? Michelle frowned. She tucked her head into her pajama top to conserve the heat and water that had accumulated there. No need to lose her hard work by walking down the hallway to the kitchen.

Michelle had to look at her feet in order not to bump against the walls, but she made it, popping her head back out just before rounding the corner.

I feel funny, Mom, she groaned, dabbing at her forehead. The water was still there. Good.

Mom turned from the counter, where she was packing Michelle’s lunch. She made a clucking sound and walked over.

What’s wrong? Mom asked, reaching for Michelle’s forehead. Michelle leaned into Mom’s touch, thrilled at how cold her hand was against Michelle’s forehead. This was absolutely going to work.

I was getting ready to take a shower and then I felt dizzy and sick to my stomach, Michelle said, lowering her voice like it
