Detroit Number's Gangster Style! Bang for Pleasure! Bang for Love! Bang for Money! Bang! Bang! Bang! - Cleo Hudson
Aint Nothing but a Gangster Party
It was a cold day in November when my sister-in-law introduced my girl to the number game. My girl's family had been in the game for over forty years. They were motivated to move to Detroit in the 50's to meet a big time number's man named Charles Johnson; aka Johnney Be Good
. He was a wheeler and dealer; a married man with many women friends, and a world traveler, going to Africa twice a year. Every Christmas Johnney and his wife would have a house party at his mansion for friends and associates, but he was still a man with great ambition. My wife and I met him at one of his parties. My sister-in-law, Joyce, pulled him to the side, saying, Johnney Be Good, this is my sister and her husband, she'll be bringing in a new book for you.
Mr. Johnson's smile lit up like a Christmas tree; as he looked my wife over, welcoming in the new business. He grabbed my hand with authority shaking it and telling me we would be best friends. What's your name country?
he asked intuitively, as if he knew I had just moved here from some southern backwoods. My wife jumped in saying, My friends and family call me Cookie and you're shaking the hand of my loving husband, Leroy. It's a pleasure to meet you Mr. Johnson.
No, the pleasure is all mine.
he seemed to sing, as he added, Trust me
, I feel like I have a new best friend and look forward to picking up the new business." I felt awkward. Here was this bad ass Detroit city slicker looking my wife over, and claiming we were best friends and he didn't even know me from Adam. It wasn't the first time I felt this way around Cookie. Even though there were a lot of fine women at Mr. Johnson's party none of them held a candle to my Cookie. But, we were being welcomed into the number's game and I didn't want to disappoint my baby, so I played the- go along to get along, for the love of my wife.
Chapter 2
Getting to Know My New Best Friend
Things were going well with Charles Johnson, until one day late in January 1954, he came by his new best friend's
house to pick up his number tape. A number tape consisted of all the 3 digit and 4 digit numbers that wishful gamblers who waged their hunch played in a week. Winning Detroit numbers were pulled from the closing amount of corporate shares traded in a day, reported in the business section of the local news.
Charles knocked on the door while skimming the newspaper in his hand. He was happy to see Cookie open the door and looking better than he remembered from the Christmas party. She was a very pretty brown skin lady with a body similar to Dorris Day. Cookie saw Mr. Johnson drive up to the house in his spanking new Cadillac Convertible. As he approached the door he took long confident and graceful strides! She was very turned on by his tall, slender and confident demeanor. She had just stepped out of the shower as she was expecting him to pick up his tape and was excited to get some one on one
time with Charles; especially since Leroy and the kids were not home. She came to the door very gracefully, thinking all the time this man is rolling in dough! She opened the door without asking, who is it? She said coyly, Oh, Mr. Johnson I didn't know it was you.
Motioning for him to come in and knowing she was lying all the time. The truth of her intentions showed in her partially robed body that displayed part of her breast. They were the most beautiful breast he had ever seen. She gave him the come-on but he didn't know how to take it, by it being his new best friend's wife. But he was already in the house and accepting of her southern hospitality. She had walked over to the stand-alone bar like a top run way model, asking and letting Charles make a choice, You know Leroy don't get off work until late tonight, if you want to stay a while you can, do you want a drink?
he replied with a somewhat regretful voice, Yes, I need one.
knowing all the time he was doing his best friend wrong. But, she was persistent, irresistible, and asked him in a voice more intoxicating than the strong cognac she poured him, Come on and let's go to my bedroom, ain’t no one home but me.
- as she went toward the bedroom, slowly taking off her clothes he was a little afraid, knowing if he had gotten caught it would have been all over with for good ole Johnney Be Good. Leroy would have blown his head off. Leroy really loved Cookie, but Cookie loved herself and pursued opportunity for herself.
Cookie pulled her robe off and took off her matching green lace panties and bra, getting into the bed that was covered in a white silk tapestry. Mr. Johnson couldn't wait to follow Cookie to the bed as he undressed, keeping one eye on Cookie, and being careful to watch how he laid down his money belt and his personal protection. They made love for hours and hours as if time didn't matter. But, Mr. Johnson had money to collect and Cookie husband would be home soon. Cookie came to her senses first, letting Mr. Johnson know, I think it's time for you to go!
. He said, Ok, but not before I give you something for your trouble...
reaching in to his money belt. She said, No, I'm not that type of girl!
as he got dressed, strapping on his money belt, which held over $80,000 in cash and fit neatly around his waist, with his 5 shot .38 Smith & Wesson pistol. Cookie gave him the number tape and a look that let him know she was well pleased with his bedroom performance.
Chapter 3
Not Your Everyday Cookie
Cookie was not your everyday girl. She went and took a shower, knowing that Leroy would be home shortly. She went to put her day to day clothes back on, waiting for Leroy to finally get home. Cookie could appreciate that her husband was a hard worker. Yet, there was never time for romance, except for on special occasions, like Christmas, Birthdays and Anniversaries. Otherwise, he was in full work gear. They also had five kids, leaving him no time for Cookie. Yet, Cookie kept her appearances up and never wanted to disappoint Leroy, just in case he would declare a special occasion in between the special days they both grew to recognize and consummate.
On the way home Mr. Johnson couldn't stop thinking about Cookie. His mind was racing with thoughts about how much he enjoyed Cookie. "That was the best Cookie I ever had he concluded out loud all the thoughts that spoke to his emotions. He wanted to give her a call, but he knew Leroy would probably be home about now. Yet, she was so nice to him, he had to do it anyway; He proceeded to pull over to the phone booth and he anxiously called her.
Hello Cookie, I had to talk to you before I got home, you know my wife will be home waiting on me, but baby you made me feel like I never felt before... I just can't get enough of you. Can we take a trip together or at least spend a night together?
She replied, I goes to New York every year and stay a weekend with my sick brother. I'll tell my husband it's time to visit my brother again, and we can head to New York. He said,
That will be great! with an enthusiasm he wished he could reel back in as he didn't want to let on how thrilled he was to have a commitment from such a special lady. In his mind all he could think was,
Now its on and popping! What am I going to tell the wife?! But he managed to keep his cool on the phone with Cookie, telling her,
I need to get things square with the wife and I look forward to spending time with you in New York. I hope the Big Apple ain’t the only thing I get to taste. He could visualize her smile and hear the joy in her voice when she said,
Trust me it won't be the only thing tasting good. Cookie's door was opening and Leroy was screaming through the door,
Honey I'm home! Mr. Johnson ended the call saving Cookie's goodbye
Say no more, we'll catch up in New York! Until then , bye for now beautiful."
Chapter 4
New York
Mr. Johnson told his wife he was going to New York on a business trip. Mr. Johnson's wife didn't mind him making moves here and there as long as the home front was ok. The bills paid, and she had spending money when Mr. Johnson was away. She was all in for him making money.
Cookie told Leroy she had to go to New York to see about her sick brother. He said with compassion, Ok.
not knowing she was going to New York to spend the weekend with his new best friend. He watched with loving eyes as Cookie packed her bags, clueless to the fact he would be dropping her off at the airport to be with Mr. Johnson.
The ride to the airport was like all the rest they had made. They would make a right turn onto 7 mile, then a left onto M-39, and then a quick rundown the home stretch over I-94. Leroy showed his deep appreciation for family and his wife as he asked Cookie, Honey is there anything I can do to lighten the load? Do you need any spending money?
She said in a loving appreciative voice, No.
, thinking she would not have to worry about any spending money as she would be with Mr. Money Bags himself, Mr. Johnson. Leroy pulled up to the departure level of the airport and shared a goodbye hug and kiss with Cookie as she grabbed her carry on and headed into the airport.
Cookie and Mr. Johnson had plans to meet at gate E17. Cookie could barely contain her excitement as she passed through security. All of her other trips to the Big Apple were filled with trepidation. But, now she was looking forward to the newness and desire she felt when she thought of spending time with Mr. Johnson.
Cookie arrived at the gate to the pleasant surprise of Mr. Johnson already there, waiting with the welcoming smile of an angel on his face. He was dressed to the nine's. Cookie's sister would always tell her how Mr. Johnson had all of his clothes imported from Europe. Cookie could not place a match from her recollection to any of the article of clothing he was wearing, to any of the catalogs or magazines she would read. He was definitely in a one of a kind. He stepped to her with skill and
