    The Meaning of Chakra

The first question that any beginner interested in chakras should ask is what they are actually. This is definitely not an English or Latin word. So, where did this word originate from and what does it mean?

Chakra is a Sanskrit word which is often mentioned in Hindu and yogic traditions. The word means wheel or circle. In yogic traditions, chakra refers to the energy points of the subtle body.

The next question that arises is what the subtle body is. In short, the subtle body is not your physical form and in fact refers to a subtle plane of existence. Different traditions describe the subtle body as the most sacred and the immortal body. In Hinduism, this is the vehicle through which your consciousness passes from one life to the other.

In other words, your physical body dies but your subtle body continues to live on. The chakras are part of the subtle body. You can visualize them and feel them, but you cannot see them with your physical eyes or through any imaging tests.

The fact that the chakras are located in the subtle body does not mean that it has no relation to the physical form. In fact, chakras are located at the major plexuses of blood vessels of veins and nerves in your body. The 7 main chakras and the minor chakras are related to one or the other plexus of your body.

A balanced chakra keeps the related physical organs and body parts in health, whereas an unhealthy chakra will cause sickness and disease in the affected body parts. So, how do you experience these chakras? The answer is quite simple. You just experience the flow of prana through these vital points.

The Significance of the Nadis and Prana

Your subtle body comprises of subtle energy channels. Again, these are non-physical energy channels. In Sanskrit, these are referred to as nadis. The vital energy or the life force flows through these nadis. This life force is referred to as prana.

So, how are chakras related to nadis? Yogic traditions believe that there are around 72,000 nadis in the subtle body. These nadis intersect with each other at various points. These meeting points of the nadis are the chakras.

The thousands of nadis intersect at various points in the body and form many chakras. Different scriptural texts report the existence of different number of chakras. So, there are many chakras in your body. However, there are only 7 main chakras that are considered to be the most important.
