    The Golden Door (The Pattern Volume 2 Serialization Part 4) - Elijah Stephens

    PART FOUR

    THE GOLDEN DOOR

    When there is no enemy within, the enemies outside cannot hurt you. African Proverb

    Paul Malone drove his wife through traffic downtown, headed towards the wealthiest part of the city. He touched Kay’s leg, as always keeping a hand on her in some way, not out of possession or insecurity but as an assurance that she was real.

    She lied about her injured feet, even if she told him the truth about stepping on broken glass. She omitted the fact that it was during an escape from four men who were planning to rape and kill her. Her brief descent would occur from time to time, but in coming back, she was always grateful to have Paul as an endless friend.

    Sullivan’s a nomad, she said. He fits in nowhere because he fits in everywhere.

    Don’t let anyone control what you do on the ground, he reminded her. Not your handler and certainly not Echlin. There’s a reason you and I ended up working together.

    I know. You told them that you wouldn’t work for them otherwise, and they appreciated your bargaining position.

    It’s a glorified task to be a warrior, said Paul, crossing into a neighborhood where the cars became evidence of local luxury. It’s more like being a garbage man than a real hero, considering the sacrifice of martyrs, but life has a way of showing us our weak spots and it helps to have someone covering your back.

    It’s a test we bring upon ourselves, and it’s fear that causes this, not life. We bring our nightmares into this world.

    I talk about dreams, you talk about nightmares, Paul noticed. What am I doing wrong here?

    I’m not ready to give my nightmares to anyone else, least of all someone that I hope has the courage to stay with me despite them.

    So where’s my test, then? he asked her. True love isn’t blind, Kay, it’s just unconditional.

    * * * * *

    Paul finished by telling his wife that he would not bring it up again, and soon they reached the estate of Senator Martha Cavendish. She was known to be a rough player in a game of backbiting politicians, and she was a stronger person with sharper teeth
