THE LOWDOWN ON LANGUAGE ARTS
Ever feel like nobody is listening when you talk? Having trouble getting your parents to see your side of an argument? Believe it or not, Language Arts class can help. Surprised? Language is all about communicating. Speaking and writing are ways you communicate, and listening and reading are how we understand communication.
By learning how communication works, you’ll be able to speak your mind effectively and confidently. After all, you’re full of opinions and important ideas. You deserve to be heard. People are more likely to pay attention if you communicate well.
You might be thinking that grammar is a bunch of boring rules. Or that literature is difficult to understand and that writing is hard. But if you can learn the latest dance craze, then you can understand grammar rules. If you can listen to your best friend’s boy problems, you can understand literature. If you can plan a party or follow a recipe, then you’ll be able to research and write without a problem.
HOW TO USE THIS BOOK
This book is designed so you can read the chapters in any order you like. If you have a grammar, literature, informational reading, or writing assignment, you can find that section quickly and get the information you need. Each chapter has a fun activity to try out each new skill. You’ll find the answers in the back.
CHAPTER 1

The same is true when it comes to grammar. The teacher asks a grammar question, and everyone looks down at the floor. Nobody wants to speak up. But once you get the hang of it, grammar is actually a lot like dancing. How? Grammar is the rhythm of the language. It’s the beat. Once you understand the rhythm of the language, your writing and speaking are going to rock!
WARM-UP TIME
Think of it this way. Dances are made up of small steps or
