You have been in the woods since dawn. Your legs ache, and your arms are sore. You are hungry, tired, and ready to go home. Then you see it. A black bear is wandering about 100 yards (91 meters) in front of you. It looks like a big one, maybe 300 pounds (136 kilograms). You drop to one knee and steady your gun.
You struggle to remember everything you were taught. You know the bear could trot away at any second. The clock is ticking. You can feel your heart racing with excitement.
After one final adjustment, you squeeze the trigger. The shot is perfect. The bear staggers and stumbles forward, heading for cover in the woods. But it won’t get far. You follow the bear’s tracks
