- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A cute book for grades 1-4. Ace Lacewing: Bug Detective is about Ace Lacewing who lives in Motham City and lives by the motto "bad bugs are my business." Using a lot of old Hollywood crime drama themes, Ace Lacewing is on the hunt for the kidnapped Queenie Bee. With the help of Sergeant Zito the mosquito and Xerces Blue, his girlfriend, Ace Lacewing hunts down the kidnapper and saves the Queen of all Honey. The book was very cute and it was filled with insect information that didn't feel cumbersome to the reader as it was laced into the story and the illustrations were fun and colorful. Definitely a book to have for little ones.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I didn't really like this book. I thought the plot of the story was hard to follow. The pace of the story wasn't smooth. The flow of the story was fast as each page jumped from one idea to the next. In the story, one page talked about the detective Ace Lacewing having dinner with Doctor Xerces and then the next page jumps to talking about downtown traffic. Once the climax was established there was no falling action, the story jumped from the climax to a resolution.I did not think the writing was very organized or engaging. The writing within the story made the storyline hard to follow because of the disorganization. During this book the reader spends too much time trying to piece the story together and gain comprehension of the story to have time to get engaged within the text. For example, Ace Lacewing learns from a source that "Al the Drone, took Queenie". The narrator doesn't talk about who Al the Drone is or why he would be interested in taking the queen so this leaves the reader confused because he/she isn't given any helpful information. The main message of the story is good conquers evil. The Queens sister, Princess Pollen, is the one who ends up kidnapping her because she wants to take over and be queen. The detective and his friends end up catching the princess in the end and saving the queen proving that good overcomes evil.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5"There was so much to do. We felt like little larvae again and almost forgot we were on a case." (Biedrzycki, 2009, no pg)Ace Lacewing, bug detective, is back again with his friends Xerces and Zito to crack the case of the stolen dough. Scratch Murphy's flea bag is robbed and Ace Lacewing, debonaire bug, searches Six Legs Park for clues. This is a who-done-it style of story and is dialogue-driven. The colorful illustrations are large and stylish. The story pays homage to the detective genre and the gumshoe-bug-hero is sure to save the day. It is a mature enough storyline and plot to hold the attention of a young juvenile reader. There is strong vocabulary and contains the nuances of a crime story that requires a certain maturity to fully marinate. It is imaginative and catchy with its flair and flow.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Ace Lacewing is a bug detective in Motham. When queenie bee gets kidnapped, it's up to Ace Lacewing and his friends to help him solve it. Great read aloud mystery book, a little long but exciting. Great illustrations to holds children's attentions.
