    Summary to this Point

This report begins with Eddie, which is a pseudonym as are the other names of the participants in Eddie’s life. This document is a rough draft of the report that is being prepared for presentation on Eddie’s behalf.

The purpose of this report is to determine the circumstances in Eddie’s life that led to the death of his father as well as the prognosis for Eddie’s future life.

Eddie is seventeen. He will be eighteen in three months. He is the older of two children. His younger brother lives with his mother. Eddie had been living with his father until his father’s violent death.

The parents were never married and their relationship had always been stormy with most of the storms brought on by substance abuse. They were not into the so-called hard drugs except for the father’s preference for prescription drugs.

They lived together until their sons were four and six years old. They typically lived in the rural area where they each grew up. It is near a small town with a population of about five thousand people and they moved to the town several times but each time came back home.

After the parents separated for good, the mother took the younger boy and went to live with her mother. From time to time, Eddie would try to live with his mother but he always ended up back with his father. There were several occasions when he also spent months living with his grandfather.

Both the mother’s family and the father’s family have lived in the area for generations. There is a history of alcohol abuse in both families.

The other people involved in Eddie’s life are his paternal grandfather and second wife, his maternal grandparents, and his father’s sister.

Eddie has the demeanor of a pleasant young man who is eager to please. He is about six feet tall and stocky but still has a baby face. He looks very much like his mother in terms of coloring and facial features.

The reason we are talking to Eddie is that his father is dead by violent means at Eddie’s hands. The information in this report comes from the series of interviews with the family and acquaintances of the deceased.

Jack was 40 when he died of multiple wounds. The father and son had been living in a shed converted into a cottage unit near a farmhouse that had been converted into apartments.

The shed had a fridge and stove as well as plumbing. There were two rooms created by a shaky plywood partition between the living area and the sleeping area.

The sleeping area contained two double mattresses on the floor. There were piles of bedding on both mattresses but the beds were unmade and the mattresses were bare.

There was no electricity in the house so there were no cooking facilities that functioned and because the water pump was electric, there was no water to drink or to use for personal hygiene.
